As you probably know, there are both U.S.-made Hollowbody and foreign-made Hollowbody 34" scale Laklands, and both are no longer in production. From what I can tell, the U.S.-made version in the $2.5 - $3K price range (not many were made), and the foreign-made ones are in the $1K price range, depending on condition. I have both, like them both a lot, but they are not the same bass. In addition to better finish and hardware and different pickups, the neck carve on U.S.-made one is slimmer and the bass feels more resonant to me. But, again, both really nice basses, IMHO. The body curves and shape make the Lakland more comfortable to play than other hollowbody basses I own (Guild, Harmony, Kay, Hofner). That Mike Tobias co-designed it is a plus, no doubt.

Interesting. Lakland always used to say the hollowbody bass was the one that was the closest to the USA model. They used to say that unless you wanted a custom color to just go with the Skyline. That was when they were first introduced though. Something could have changed along the years.

Just scored an early Korean Hollowbody (btw interesting that it does have US Hipshots).
Previous owner changed pots to Vol Bal (which is a great upgrade, I had vol vol Hollowbody before and always struggled with finding right mix of pickups). He also dismounted pickup switch and put there "faux" knob.
Anyway, I think about installing a preamp there - any tips? Tone control is must, otherwise I would be happy to use all original holes. Thanks!

This gave it much more flexibility with the option to cut as well as boost, but with the added mids control is where it made me smile the most.
Well, that and the added blocks of course.

This gave it much more flexibility with the option to cut as well as boost, but with the added mids control is where it made me smile the most.

In August I bought a Hollowbody too, Korean made with Chi Sonics in it. Love the bass, apart from the single coil hum, but will definately be modding to a single volume and blend, I am interested in putting a preamp in to, with active and passive. Will the active produce more hum? Also what is the best system to reccomend?Nice grab dude!

Do they still make the 55-01? I haven't seen one for a while. I find myself picturing what would give me more sonic variability next to my 55-02d and my 55-60 fretless. The 55-01 with maybe Nordstrands and a new preamp feels like a great project to get me there.
That was true from when the bass was first launched until at least Dan left the company.
As the guitar club sponsor at school for the past 3 years, I wanted to keep a bass in my classroom so that I did not have to remember to bring one, plus practice in my off time for church and gigs. I decided to contact Brian at Lakland and buy the Blemished 55-60 Lake Placid Blue which was on the latest (not todays email) email about the B stock and blemished basses/guitars.

you should consider a 55-OS. It already has the upgraded Bartolini preamp.
