Lakland Owners Group #69

Hey guys, let me get your opinion. If I can get a 2010 44-94 for $2000, should I jump on it? I have a 2007 4-02 and love it, but now keep thinking of a top of the line Lakland. New its going form $4350.

It has a quilted top in tobaccoburst which I never considered before. Those with quilted topped Laklands, how do you like them? From what I can find on the internet, I know tone wise, there won't be a noticeable difference, but build wise yes. I've never spent that much on a bass, but I'll be 55 in 2 weeks and may want to treat myself.

Thanks for sharing any thoughts on the 44-94 vs a 44-02, and a quilted top Lakland.

Can’t speak for the 44-02/44-94 but have gone through the 55-02/55-14/55-94 evolution and if you want to play something that feels amazing in your hands, the 94 neck is the best thing I’ve ever played. It sounds the same (assuming your 02 has LH3 system) but how the instrument feels in your hands is heads and tails better. I personally think it’s worth the extra investment.

My ‘06 55-94 in quilted tobacco burst (L) and my ‘98 55-94 in quilted cherry burst (R).

Plus, $2k is a price point that you'll easily get back if you decide its not your thing and decide to sell it. :thumbsup:

Thanks so much! Lol, you mentioned the 55-14, I looked at the 44-14 as well. From what I could find online, this is exactly what I am hearing. The sound will be similar but feel is just different. Thanks! And beautiful set of basses.

I have a quilted top 55-02 and I think it is great!

Thank you! I love them both.

What can I say about the Noble other than it cured my G.A.S. Or maybe that I thought I liked my tone until I added it and now I really don’t like to play without it?

I’m a grinch and see similarities between the 55-94 and the Noble; I was convinced they both were all hype and there’s no way they could justify the added expense. Well, they do.

As a matter of practicality, it uses a Fender(ish) tone stack so if you don’t like that, it may not be for you.

I'd say that's a decent price - and as others have said...there is something "magic" about a US neck!

I have never been disappointed with the US quilted tops I've had over the years....they were/are all beautiful!

Haha yep I know!! I have 3 Laklands. All Skylines and now I’m looking at top of the line models. When I first joined LOG I remember a comment that your first Lakland is a gateway drug to more Laklands. So true!!

I have aa question about serial #'s... I was looking at this 44-14... and after inquiring, was told that the serial # is 440032... Do the Classics use a different serial number format? I'm used to seeing the year first...

after researching, I feel like it means 34', 4-string, #32 built in 2000? Does that sound right?

Also, if someone wants to beat my GAS, this bass is for sale on their Music-Go-Round site for $1700

The 44 classics are sequential (so that’s the 32nd 44-14 made), I don’t think there’s anything else in the serial #. Looks like the P’s are P4###, J’s are J4### and the 55-14’s are 55###

Also, 44/55-14’s didn’t start being made until 2014, hence the -14

Started out with a Skyline 44-02, loved it. Upgraded to a 44-94 (2008 build) and the the build better, however the neck is night and day different, feels incredible. My only regret, I sold the Skyline, should have kept it as a hack.

Correct, and the Classic Dual-Js are numbered along with their -14 counterparts. There is no special numbering scheme for the 44-JJ and the 55-JJ Classics.

I have both a 55-02 and 44-02 - really love them. $2k for a US model, I would be all over that. In Canada, a 44-02 is $2500 + taxes (add 13%), then add a case. I have very rarely seen a used US Lakkie around these parts - new, a basic spec 44-94 starts closer to $5000 CDN before taxes. And it is true, once you start down the Lakland road, it's an addictive and inspiring journey - I hope to score a US 44-94 or 55-94 someday! Let us know how you make out and post pics pls!
