I was told by Lakland that the EXL170-5SL were what was on my Skyline DJ5 from the factory . They sent me this link EXL1705SL Nickel Wound 5String | Bass Guitar Strings | D'Addario so I ordered a couple of sets.
I’ve had the DJ5 just over 2 months, and had 30+ gigs with it, and haven’t changed the strings yet. They are sounding better and better as they age
So I had a decal covering my 55-14 with our (former) band sponsor's logo and I wasn't sure if I wanted to keep it on there or not now that they booted us (Good terms. Apparently they cut ALL band/live music sponsorships).
It's my no. 2 gigging bass so in a fit of boredom the other night, I laid into it and took to peeling it off nice and slow, using a razor blade to encourage it, and wouldn't you know, right at the end I must have lost my patience and pulled too hard as a nice sized chunk of finish came off with it right by the bridge.
While I absolutely love the sound of this bass (thick and punchy), I've never been a fan of the tobacco burst or exposed grain so I spent about 10 minutes using this as a great excuse to get it repainted. It didn't take long for me to decide I'll just let it ride instead of putting another $500+ into it. I had a black guard laying around so slapped it on it and think it looks 100% better. Cleaned it, threw a new set of Lakland steels on it, set it up, and she sounds better than ever. Looks kinda cool now too...kinda.
It goes without saying; don't be foolish and put decals on yer basses kids!

I messed up on the model number... and the spelling, the Skylines ship with D'Addario 45–100 and I just looked it up you are absolutely right it's the XL 170

Although if it got you a sponsorship (or helped maintain one)… love my Lakland but they’re workhorse basses*, I wouldn’t be too upset. Plus it does look good with the black guard…It goes without saying; don't be foolish and put decals on yer basses kids!
*The ones with fancy tops are possibly exceptions to this

I messed up the finish of a 55-94 the same way, trying to remove a glued pickguard... I wonder where that bass is.
Gluboost has some black. I’ve done spot repairs with it, and other than a faint witness line (if that’s the correct term) the repairs were not noticeable after sanding and polishing.

I don't normally do this but what in tarnation is this beast? Guitar Center has it listed as a 44-94 and it's priced in that range but this is like no 44-94 I've ever seen. 44-64 body. P/J with a mud bucker and the J set almost on top of the bridge it's so far back. Appears to be some type of custom build?

Definitely not a 44-94...
Looks like they made a prototype for Billy Sheehan but he decided to stay with Yamaha.
