My pickguard came direct from Lakland today. $50 with shipping. I love it! Here is a before and after.

I play nothing but 5 strings right now but boy do I have a hankering for a 44-02/44-94/44-60. It's completely illogical but it feels like there's a hole in my life without one.

AND WOULD ONE OF YOU BUY THAT DANG SEAFOAM 44-64 IN THE LAKLAND B-STOCK EMAIL!! I almost snagged it yesterday on a lark before remembering that I don't generally like P/J's.

Took my 12 day old 55-02 to a rehearsal this morning for the first time out and I noticed the preamp is very noisy. The last 12 days I've had it in the house setting it up and shedding on it and getting used to the feel of it and really enjoying the feel of it. Decided to take it to a rehearsal because I was going to use it on this particular gig next week. Here at home I never really cranked it up on an amp or in my studio So I didn't notice any noise.

At the rehearsal space I believe there are some grounding issues that I don't have at home but the noise was evident when turning up the volume past half way even at home on my Aguilar TH 700 and a SL 112. Straight into the amp no pedals just bass and cable tried a few different cables still noisy. Went to my studio room plugged in and cranked the volume and boosted monitor volume noise was there. A+B'd with a couple of my Sadowsky's to see if there are noise issues in my house and amp and studio setup. Cranked them and the Sadowsky's were dead quiet.
Noise is less on the 55-02 flipping the coil switch to rear half of the MM pup. More noisy flipping to the front J pup.

I've researched and saw a few older TB threads that mention a noisy preamp and some threads were people said it was dead quiet. Anyone have or had a noisy preamp on a newer or older 55-02? or a dead quiet preamp with a newer or older 55-02.Is it something that is inherent with the LH Pre. Mine is a 2022 build.
It's disappointing because I love the way the bass sounds minus the noise but I can't gig with it with
the noise. May have to return it. Thanks for any input.

Never heard even the slightest noise from my LH equipped 55-02. It's dead quiet in all pickup settings.

My 2017 55-02 with LH3 electronics has been dead quiet everywhere I've played it, be it studio, stage, rehearsal, or home. It was my gateway Lakland that lead me to acquiring (too) many more.

(As an aside, 7 of 10 songs on our last album we're recorded using that 55-02.)

(As an aside, 7 of 10 songs on our last album were recorded using that 55-02.)

Thanks for the reply. Guess I got bad one. Appreciate it. I did a ton of research on it before I purchased it. Never saw one review of a noisy pre amp.

Could it have been the rehearsal room? Maybe the amp had grounding issues?

The rehearsal space amp definitely had grounding issues as far as taking hands off strings etc and getting buzz. I don’t get that at home. But I am getting noise at home with that’s really evident at full volume.More or less depending on the coil switch position.

You may want to check the grounding in the control cavity, as I recall there is no shielding in the 55-02 control cavity. Adding shielding my be the fix. Check it with a jumper wire from pots to ground first. Also, if you put your hand on the strings or bridge do you still hear any noise? If so, it’s probably a grounding issue. Just my 2 pennies.

Hum more or less. I also noticed a strange warble every now and then that I can’t reproduce. At first I thought I was hearing things. When I was setting up the bass etc at home I had my amp level way down and the bass volume full. But with the amp and bass at gig levels at home I can hear the hum. Pretty much the reason I took it to rehearsal to test run it at gig levels.

Hey Charles, My 55-02 has always been quiet. I did replace the pre in my 55-AJ. I have an extra LH3 here that was also quiet. You are more than welcome to it should it be the pre amp.

Hey Charles, My 55-02 has always been quiet. I did replace the pre in my 55-AJ. I have an extra LH3 here that was also quiet. You are more than welcome to it should it be the pre amp.

Usually markings on a guard like that come from the company who cut the guard. It refers to the pickguard type, material, or maybe both. I have no idea if thats the case here.

What do you think of these cracks in a 55-02? Is it worth repairing them or replace the neck?

Is that new? I'm sure its repairable but if its within a return period I would go that route.
