I had a long winded reply but decided against it.

I don't think hard failures are subjective. What is subjective is how much work is acceptable to be needed on a brand new instrument.

I am straddling that line and want to land on the side of Lakland. My 44-94 now plays as expected and is a great bass. It is my personal issue if I get jaded by the path it took to get where my Laklands are now.

I am sorry if this thread turned negative at times. I do appreciate reading the good and the bad. It is only fair and honest.

I get it, and agree with the statement "I don't think hard failures are subjective". Whether I'm buying MTD USA or Kingston, Sadowski USA or Metro, Lakland USA or Skyline, etc. one should expect there to be a difference in the quality of components, yet a functioning instrument that is ready to perform on a gig. I am not trying to defend or condemn Lakland. My original thought was off-tract from the aforementioned issues that were being discussed. I was thinking more along the lines of the ratio of those who have issues out of the box to those who have no issues at all regardless of whether it being made in the USA or abroad.
Sorry, I wasn't trying to derail or create any type of negativity. I was attempting to join the discussion with a thought that was going in an entirely different direction.

Just bought a 5594 on GC used.

I’m thinking it’s an older model. Thoughts on the serial 5932?

I just recently fixed my first 55-02 I got 20 years ago. To be honest it was used mostly sporadically, but I should have taken it in years ago. Bought new in 2003, and by 2007 I had another 55-02 that I used more, and only when I needed a 5, I play a 4 string more often. But anyways, the thing always ate batteries, I Just got used to pulling it out when I was done because it might be a few months before I touch it again. Time went on and I actually started preferring it over the newer one (Barts vs Lakland) and was still just annoyed by it. Opened it up a month or two ago and started tracing wires. The black wire from the battery box was soldered right to the copper strip in the control cavity, and the bridge ground was wired to the jack. Got out the soldering iron and soon had it fixed up, never to eat another battery.

Just to add the one with Lakland electronics seems a bit noisier, but is more quiet when I run it with the bridge coil and split the blend 50/50 (my go to setting on both of them).

I was surprised by some of the subtle differences in neck profiles for each but both are great players.

Nice pair. I have a DJ-4 and a 44-64 both with 1.5" nuts and very different neck profiles. The DJ-4 I find to be chunkier, but very comfortable. The 44-64 is a very thin neck.

So what's the interesting history??

My DJ4 has a slightly thinner neck than the 44-60, which is more of a classic C with a bit of girth higher up the neck. The DJ4 also has a slightly wide neck than the 44-60 going above the 12th fret. Minor but noticeable, not in a bad way. Just different.

So this DJ4 started it's life as a limited run for Chicago Music Exchange I believe. It originally had an all maple neck and fretboard with black block inlays, non-matching headstock. The color is trans-burgundy. The original owner had updated the electronics to an all Bartolini pickup/preamp system. The next owner (who I purchased it from) got a replacement neck from Lakland (the one on there currently) which I think looks great, new pickguard, Nordstrand 70's wound pickups, and an Audere 4-band preamp with passive tone control. These pickups sound great. I don't ever really use the pre-amp that much. Judging by the dimensions and measurements I took compared to my 44-60, the pickups in the DJ4 appear to be in the 70's position.

I dig the Nordstrand pickups. May put some in the 44-60.

I put the same strings on my 55-02 as soon as I got it. They play and sound great!

NBD for me! US Lakland 44-64 Lake Placid Blue Relic from Sweetwater! 1.75 nut, which doesn't feel like it, and Lakland pickups, which I am very pleased with. First few Laklands I had long ago all came stock with Fralins. I have longed for this bass for years. This is my reintroduction to the LOG after being away for about 13 years without a Lakland. I forgot how stellar these necks are, and the roast on this one is just beautiful!
