I had never actually tried my 44-02 without a battery in passive, I did today when I changed the battery and it does work with no 9v. It's nice to know, not that I'll run it that way and I always keep a spare 9v battery in my bag. I know my 44-01 has to have a battery. I've changed the battery every 6 months more or less on all my active basses and never had a problem. But I like the fact that my Lakland 44-02 and my G&L L-2000 can both be run in passive with no battery if needed. Cheers !!!
Doug don’t you have the blue version of that bass? Scheff’s own bass?
It's a fiver .....yes used to being to one of Jerry's sons ( not Jason) .
And I'm told Jerry played it quite a bit

Last time I was at Lakland JP and I were talking about that bass
He said it's almost impossible to find those pickups anymore so he's not sure if Lakeland will ever make another Scheff.

Setting up for my gig on Saturday and I pull Old Glory out of my case and my BL asks, “New bass?” I blank stare and he says. “Oh, yeah, probably not.” No worries. I’ve just played it in over 200 shows with him over the years.

Posted a pic of the 55-64's on Facebook this morning.
Well this prompted me to take them out of the closet over my lunch and give them a once over. I decided to change the sunburst pickguard from tort back to black. In the process of doing so, I saw my Stellar Tone Tonestyler that's been sitting on my workbench for about 5 years so I decided to install that too...and I gotta say, I'm not sure if I like it. Don't get me wrong, it sounds absolutely Stellar (pun intended) on the E, A, D, and G strings but it seems to choke on the B string. I have a set of LaBella Deep Talkin' Flats on it so not sure if that's contributing but I'll give it some time to see if my ear aclimates to it but if it doesn't, out it will go.

A Stellartone is like a varitone that gives you different capacitor settings. Transparent in the open position and then different tonal accents across the notched positions.
Mines an older one with 16 different settings from wide open to dark and woolly. It has some really amazing and punchy options…except for the B string. It brings some very nice tonal options to a passive bass and it uses quiet switching between the settings.
