My Orange 54 JJ (Clementine) has been my stalwart for several years, but recently I rediscovered 4s (BEAD) and am digging' it rather heavily.....I had parted with all my 4s 15 years ago...........it feels great (and tempting) that as a "34 inch only" player, my only Lakie options in a 5er have to be custom, but all the in stock 4s are possibilities.....so this happened to me last week.....amazing.....buckeye over alder, roasted maple neck & headstock, flame on the neck....I strung it with La Bella low tension light flats .....the B is only 118 so the nut didn't need any filing. 8.6 lbs.

I occasionally do "miss" the G string and that's what made me want to start experimenting with BEAD. I'm a hobbyist/average player, and had fallen into a bit of a rut......too often climbing arpeggios & scales in my lines.....I wanted to force myself to think a bit differently and this has given me a bit of a reboot.....forced me to change up some lines I have been playing for a long time......keeping a lower groove, a little less noodly and more percussive/ foundational. I considered going EADG but found I missed the B string far more than the G. The whole experiment is only a month old, and I am learning to alternate freely between the 4 and 5. I can still play any of my band's tunes on the 4, although I have re-thunk many of them and learned some new twists. When I noodle on my own I do miss the G more.....I dunno at this point how many 5s I'll keep. I had always had a very strict 6 bass rule....1 in/ 1 out, but the 4 thing has bloated me to 8 (5 5s and 3 4s), so I might well part with another 5er or 2. When I have 6, they all get played. At 8, there are a couple of lonely basses and not enough room in the closet.

Who says you can't have a boutique precision? That looks sweet and a great bookmatch on the top. I imagine it probably takes some mental recalibration when switching between basses. I remember when I got a 4 string again after playing nothing but a 5 for years. I forced myself to switch between the two often to the point where I got comfortable enough that I didn't even think about it. Sure there were some hiccups along the way but you get there eventually. Is that a jazz width on the neck?

I’m pretty sure Lākland will pretty much do whatever you want. If it isn’t on the website, you can reach out to them for additional options. Their Chicago shop is a true custom shop.

Not sure about burst headstocks....
