Then I must have a bad DJ5 mines needs shimming, fret spout galore, this thing needs a better neck, which is disappointing because my log p5 and 5501 are great. I think that's the biggest difference between Skylines and USA among other things, the stability of the neck...

Interesting, and I agree, that is rare. I recently had a Skyline J-sonic model with a badly warped neck. First and only guitar or bass I ever had with that condition so I accept things happen. I have probably owned 7-8 DJ5 and never experienced your issues. Every Skyline DJ and others, J-Sonic excepted, have not been an issue. All have been preference keep or sell.
FWIW, my Skyline 44-60 has an incredible neck. Rivals any Fenders I’ve played.
Similarly - I use my 55-94 for recording whereas the my 55-60 has been my live bass for 5 years now. I prefer the way that Jazz body hangs off the strap when playing live compared to the 55-94/14/02.

Plus the neck of my 55-60 is getting that really nice and worn feel to it.
Exactly the same here. 44-02 for recording and home play and DJ-4 for band play.
1, previous owner updated it to John East preamp. Vol, Bal, Tone (pull to passive, works in both modes), bass, treble.
Extremely musical preamp, I like it very much. I run it set flat in active mode most of the time, using tone pot only. Both pickups have very different voicings, so it's actually really universal bass.
I had more Lakland HBs in past, but always preferred sound of Chi sonics over sometimes too dark Barts.
2, ergonomy is top notch here, even balance on strap is great (4,2kg). No sharp edges at all.

Question:
When I tried this out at the store, I did not realize that the volume was push/pull for active bypass. I get no output (zero) in passive. This is either a wiring issue or bad pot. Am I missing out on anything in passive? Opinions on leaving it as is or shall I contact lakland?

You won’t get anything at zero in the passive mode. Above that, you’ll begin to get a little trickle of volume. It comes up very gradually and is nothing like the volume you get with the
preamp engaged.

Volume is full on with zero sound when bypassed. Is it a big deal or am I not missing much? I know these aren’t exactly known for their passive sound.
I want a 4 string version of one of those in a bad way.
Sheffs are definitely an acquired taste. they rock, but definitely are unique
You should be able to run the bass in passive mode, the output is kind of weak and the tone controls don't work, but the volume, pickup pan and coil tap for the back humbucker should work. Maybe the push/pull volume control is bad, or something else is loose inside. I'd get it fixed, as it's a nice feature in case the battery dies you can just pull the knob and finish a set or gig until you can replace the battery.
