The relic thing is also weird when combined with roasted maple necks which is really a recent fad.

I actually do not get the relic trend. From a marketing perspective I totally get it. There are only so many actual vintage instruments and none that would be considered affordable, but yet everyone(sic) wants one.
The answer, reissues with what the manufacturer thinks would look vintage, so now everyone can have a vintage looking or inspired guitar.
As I type this, I have a few peices of furniture in my garage that's I'm refinishing to "look" vintage, to sell at our booth in a "Vintage" shop. That's what ppl want, so that's what gets made.
I personally do not like this on basses, because it's not authentic. I personally, want a nice "finished" guitar.

Same. I like my basses to look as new as the day I bought them. Hard for me to do with the sunburst basses.

Natty quilt on maple with the khaki could look pretty sharp although high probability of getting filthy dirty

It’s a classic comp. I had a couple in a rack when I was an engineer. Every bass sound better with a great comp.
A great comp makes every bass sound better but a bad comp makes everything sound way worse! I’ve had a few that I wouldn’t wish on anyone
Can you tell me a little more about it. What brand? It's a little hard to see with the shadows. I use a Keeley Bassist Limiting Amplifier Compressor. I love its simplicity and how it tames the peaks but also seems to add some punch.
It’s the UA 1176. Made by the same company that made the original 1176. I had the Keeley and it’s fine but this one imparts a fatness and brings the everything up a whole notch tonally. It’s not transparent but in a good way.
There are so many good choices available depending on what you want to achieve, features, tone, etc. This is what I use, very versatile.
