Lakland Skyline News!

Just emailed Jeannie Pickguards to see if he'll be able to offer a gold anodized aluminum pickguard for the 3TB Bob Glaub 5 string. Although I'd prefer some different color choices, I'll settle ("make lemonade" ;)) for the '57 P look :D. I can't wait 2 more years for a BG5 w/ new color choices.... well, maybe I could... I'll probably never play it out w/ a band anyways :(. I've got 2 other Laklands that get all my gig time.

Ahh, 5h!+ that's never stopped me from buying a Lakie before now has it :rollno:. :D:bassist::help::help::help:

Hey, isn't this a DJ? I didn't know DJ's came in TGM. Maybe it was a special order?

Well anyway, I'm thinking of a BB 5'er and if I can get it in the DJ form, that'd be awesome. I guess I'm gonna have to wait for that. In the meantime, an Inca Silver BB JO5 w/maple fb could help me forget about the DJ, but it doesn't seem like an option now :( What to do...

I'm in for Cort being dropped too, but my fear is prices of Skylines will "skyrocket" and rival that of the already produced U.S. line.
Are there really that many production differences to the Skylines that would warrant both lines being U.S. produced? All while Skylines remaining affordable?

At this point I think they have reached the peak of what an import should be priced at unless the production is set up like the Japanese Sadowsky Metro line. I think they should be able to get US bodies and have the price go up only a little. If they limit options and colors I would like to think it could work but honestly they are already priced close to US Music Mans and Fenders.

The question would then be if Lakland could "make up the difference" in the taxes/tariffs of importing from Cort.

Who knows?

Ye, that's an US ordered DJ4 in TGM. I posted this just to show which is TGM colour ;)

Honestly, the only issue that I've ever seen (and now watch for) w/ Skylines: they occasionally suffer from a misaligned bridge. The strings will be shifted either toward the G string side of the fretboard, or the E (or B on 5ers). I should say that all builders have an ocassional bass w/ this problem: there's a US Fender and MMSR at my GC w/ this,
both priced >400 bucks more than many new Skys.

US Lakies typically weigh less than Skys, but you can find a rare <9lb 4-banger and 5s that are 9.5-ish. The neck finishes on ALL Laklands are wonderful: 2 different kinds of smooth fast bliss!

And something that everyone should know is that the only thing done overseas is paint and screwing the pieces together. The pups/electronics are installed in Chicago, and the frets get Plek'ed and gone over there too. So (excluding wood and finish variables) a Sky will IMO sound and play as good as a US.

I'm biased of course, but I truly believe Skys are worth much more than what they sell for.

I don't think they are overpriced but I think they are at the peak of what an import should be. If they were to increase even a little bit I think it would be going to far.

A good comparison would be a G&L tribute. That is also made in the Indonesian plant and has US electronics. If you paid the $250 or whatever to get it PLEK'd, a L-2000 Tribute would still be hundreds less than a comparable Skyline 44-02.

Just an observation.

I've always felt they were GREAT values especially since Fender raised their prices. My biggest frustration with Skylines has been availability. To me its Fender that's reached the limit with their new US pricing approaching Metro's (which they simply don't compare too). I always thought the Price hierarchy as far as value was low price-Fender Japan, Mid price-Lakland Skyline, and high end production-Sadowsky Metro. To me the Skylines are a better value with the Fender Japan stuff now in the same category.

Fender lowered their US prices again. The difference in MSRP between a Skyline Glaub and US Precision is $300 roughly. That equates to under $200 street. In fact I just looked and you can score a new US Precision for $100 more than a Skyline Glaub if you look around. It is not chump change but that is going from an import to a US model.

I agree that US Fenders are a bit up there price wise but they are still the cheapest US manufacturer pretty much. A US Music Man, Ric, G&L, etc, etc, are all even more expensive than that.
