Lakland Skyline values?

I was on Lakeland's site and it looks like their necks are extra wide. It said at end of fret the width is 3.3. I bought a neck from Carvin on a bass I am building and it is 3.0 at the last fret and I was thinking that is kind of wide. I am not sure how comfortable that wide neck on the Lakelands are. I have heard here on this post that their necks are awesome. Can someone please let me know. I am getting really interested in owning a Lakeland but since I can't audition one in person I am depending on some good responses here.

I love their necks! But I prefer wider string spacings. If I were you I'd order one from Bass Central. They're running specials on their Skyline pieces and they have a great return policy should you decide it's not for you.

Thank you very much. I use two Laklands, a 44-02 for a CGCF tuning and a 55-02 for a BEADG tuning.
We are an odd combination of thrash and doom. You'd think that the two wouldn't work together, but I think we are marrying them in a way that doesn't burn out the listener. Sometimes too much slowness makes you tired of it, and too much speed makes you immune to the rush of it. That's why I like bands like Cathedral and Bolt Thrower that blend to the two together.

Thanks. I'm definitely checking your stuff out. I really dig your sound. If I was to start an original metal band, it would be something in that same arena.

The Lakland basses aside, I hope that metal can turn the corner and bring its self out of the extreme niches. I know we aren't radio friendly or anything, but its good heavy rock'n stuff. Nothing makes me happier than seeing younger people at our shows rock'n out. They are the future of the genre and they need to be reminded that metal can be...you know...fun.

I could talk for hours on this subject. I consider myself a hard rock/metal guy but the truth is I hate most metal bands. I find the music interesting (guitars, drums, bass) but most vocalists kill it for me. I primarily only listen to classic rock anymore. I don't dislike all aggressive vocals but it needs to be done tastefully IMO. I dig groove and melody. Most metal bands lack those elements. One of the reasons I'm not usually into thrash. Most of the time it's just fast but lacks any groove. I think heavy music can be interesting and fun to listen while also having well written lyrics and melodies you can sing too. As an example, that's one thing I love about Killswitch Engage. Loud, aggressive grooving songs that are very singable. Probably why they are so popular and still going strong when so many other bands from their era have died.

I am certainly not a metal guy, especially post Metallica, but for any type of popular music, if you can't hum it or tap your foot to it, no one will like it except for musicians.

Back to Laklands, I went by the GC in Bridgeton, MO this morning to buy studio monitors. I had my DJ5 because I was returning from a trip. I also love to play through MarkBass stacks. My DJ5 was sounding great with a that VTF turned up and the mids boosted. I also played an Ibanez SRF665 with import Nordstrand reverse P/J setup. The Ibanez sounded great, but that neck was like a toy compared to my DJ5. My bass sounded so good, two other bassists came over to play it. Both were good. One was actually a guitarist for the late David Peaston, for those of you who know your Eighties Gospel and R&B.

I used to play ibanez, notorious for the thinner necks. I love the Lakland neck. It is bigger, but I think easier to get around on. You won't be disappointed. Also, I have your average size man hands. Lol.

I love all of mine but the dj5 is #1 and the 55-60 is my #2 all around bass. They all have different flavors depending on the mood. It's the necks that got me hooked.

I play several US Laklands, including a few Jazz and Precision style 4 stringers. They are everything I want in a traditional style instrument. I finally broke down and bought my first Skyline, a 2006 Korean-made 44-64, because it has a factory-installed Hammon Darkstar pickup that I wanted to try.

It is very nice, but it's not equal to the US Laklands on a number of levels.
The neck is much more flexible (and it's a 1.75" P neck), and the body is made from three pieces of wood and the joint/seam lines are visible under the paint. The fretwork is superb, the neck/body fitting is excellent, it sets up and plays impeccably well, and I LOVE!!! the Darkstar.

My Skyline is great, but I won't be selling my US Laklands and replacing them with Asian-built/US set-up instruments.

Hi, I'm GAS-ing for a used JO Candy apple red Skyline. Essentially a MIK 2002 Joe Osborn. Would you say the quality of the skylines improved over the years? I think 2002 was the 2nd year so just wondering.

Also, was there a big price difference between the DJ4 and the JO? The guy I'm supposed to deal with had a DJ4 that I wanted to buy but sold it and now he's proposing me the same deal, but with a JO instead. If those basses were not the same price new I'd like to substract the difference...

IMO the quality has not improved over the first year models. The 2002/2003 models are the closest they had never been to the USA Laklands. I have played plenty of Skylines and owned a few of the early ones. I currently own a Skyline and a USA Lakland. They were solid up until about 2005 and then I feel like there was a serious drop in quality. When they shifted production to Indonesia and got the PLEK machine the quality improved again and has been consistently decent. The current level of quality is nice but not anywhere near the early ones.

I ordered a 55-02 deluxe earlier this year and it was a complete piece of junk. Arrived direct from the factory with four significant flaws. I returned it immediately. To compare them to an MIA Fender is preposterous.

So one lemon dictates the rest of the company?? Hmm...Poor Fender then...

You're doing yourself a disservice by judging Lakland by one bass.


PS. Yes I'm a lakland fan. I'm also a Fender fan.
