Lakland Thunderbird?

These appear to be two different basses, or one but after severe modification which I question one would do to an unique bass.
I wouldn't tell if the shapes are different since the prototype is shown in an angle, they could well be the same. The fret marks wouldn't tell any since the neck or the fretboard could've been changed or fret marks installed.
However, from that hi-res photo it seems to me that:
- the bass' scale is probably 35" since the bridge is noticeably closer to the end of the body. If so, that could be the same bass but with a new neck;
- not only there are ChiSonics installed on the bass, they are installed in other positions. Thus, be it the same bass, the modder would have to do something about the holes from the previous pick ups

That is one sweet bass. I'm gonna follow this thread cause I want to know the story behind this. If Lakland is making a T-Bird style bass I'm grabbing one of those bad boys. Oh the GAS pains are kicking in.

I love a T Bird, and if Lakland begins making one, that is going to be my next bass. Especially if they make it in a 5 string!

Brian from Lakland believes it is the prototype body that was modified. If you look closely at the photo below you can see an extra prototype body on the shelf behind Dan. My guess is that someone that body ended up being the bass being used in the video.

He wanted to make sure I knew it was NOT going to be a production model.

I agree that would be pretty sweet even though I personally have no interest in owning a 5er but since there's not much of a market for one I wouldn't hold my breath.

However, have you seen the new Epiphone Thunderbird Pro that is due to hit the market soon? It comes in a four and five string version and has some pretty appealing features/colors.

Check them out on the Gibson USA site. Well worth a look if you haven't checked them out yet.

Cheers.

here is what I got from my friend"

"Last I had heard about this it’s a Lakland custom that Tobin had built for the Metamorphosis CD Release and their current tour…. As far as I know it’s there is only his single one….as it was a special Birthday gift to him from Jacoby & Jerry."

I'm a little confused by the wording but if they are saying this is the only one then that is obviously not true. Someone back in the Dudepit days bought that prototype one pictured and this bass is obviously not that one so there are at least two LaklandBirds in existence.
