brief gig report, as i gotta run to the next one:
Big, big winner. I took this bass and my LG5 last night for a classic rock band, fronted by a lady singer. Bass, drums, piano, guitar, all 5 of us sing.
This bass is *fat,*, man I love that NP5 pickup. Very organic top end, not the shiny extended top end I'm used to out of my Sadowsky JJ5;s-but who's surprised by that
But the LG5 felt thin in the middle by comparison, and everyone noted that, even my girlfriend...usually she's not so great at describing differences, but she said "that new bass just sounds so much fuller and richer and 3D than the silver one. Play it more."
Pretty much what the band said too, which really is a surprise cause they all know and love the LG5.
I have a job Sunday with a Cajun dance band, and I'll probably take the same rig and same two basses to see if the end result is similar.
one critical note:
the upper horn falls short of 12th position, where I most prefer them.
This BG5 has the strap button at about position 13...
This means the bass hangs a little more to the left than I prefer...combine this with the 35" scale, and first position is a tad bit more to the left than I'm used to.
it's a small thing, to be sure, but worth mentioning.
to contrast, the LG5's strap button actually lands at like 11 1/2th position, making first position a bit easier reach.

I've found this to be a big deal for me. I cycled through Roscoe LG and SKB bodies due to this. The Century is right at the 12th fret, same as my Deep 5 and Lull PJ. Though interestingly enough there still are differences in the way they hang, due to the body shape and where it presses against my body. In my advanced age I've gotten to where ergos are more important to me than the sound - if it tweaks my body I won't play it.

While I love my Reverends, sonically, that's their biggest shortcoming.

The Cajun gig went well.
I used the M6 and an Epi UL410.
I took the Alleva LG5 again as well; it fared better against the BG5 than it did last time...none of that thin in the middle stuff this time, so, that must have been a room anomoly.
I still wish the upper horn extended to 12th position, but, it's a doable reach to first position. All my Fender P''s have the strap button at position 11, so, this bass being at 13, plus the longer scale really is a difference I feel.
The tone is fat, and aggressive: I've always loved that 70's ash/maple P thing.
P-bass: it's a good thing.
I haven't had a P5, ever, really, other than the 51P5 reissue I built, but, that's all single coil: a different thing
I love this bass; it's gonna get a lot of work.
I got one of the new Lakland hard shell cases with this; I'm not a hardshell case kinda guy.
If any of you Lakland fans needs a spiffy new case, hit me with a pm...

I've never played a P5 that was worth having over this one.
Well, I've spent some extensive time a/b'ing them now, and I have to say, the Lakland holds up. The '72 seems to get a tad fatter and softer if played right over the end of the fingerboard, but, the Lakland has brand new strings and may well "settle in to that."
No fresh pix of the BG5 yet, but here's a few snaps of the '72:

Nice! Per your gig report above, it does not surprise me at all that the more throaty low mids of the P work a bit better with your somewhat low mid polite rig (M9/410UL). That mix and match probably sounds very good! I too found the 410UL a little 'hollow sounding' with most J type instruments without some pretty significant EQing. Since the M6/9 are a bit scooped in the low mids, that P probably helps bring everything back to 'relatively flat'. Cool!

I assume that is to adjust for the 35" scale, and get the longer scale instrument to sound as close to the 34" scale target as possible.
Exact vintage pickup position was derived using 34" scale instruments.
Last job I did was with my blues band.
Glaub>Walkabout and an LDS stack consisting of one 2x8+5, and one 2x8+horn.
Glaub+Walkabout was just pretty much meant for each other.
The bass is settled in, and has an "acclimated to Missouri" setup on it, and it just flat out plays and sounds awesome.

I wonder how the color compares to fender's sunset orange? (I have two) from the pics above it has the quality I love - orange in some light, red in others . . . f'n gorgeous!!
