I am down to 5 USA Laklands(It's a thing) and owned many and have done the hand rubbed neck treatment on a Japanese series and several Skylines. If you are used to a USA neck, and needed 5'er, P bass, jazz style, etc. and get a skyline to hold you over until you can get your hands on a USA, do it. Time and patience is all it takes.
I was always a Fender guy and still am but ever since I picked this up it's really opened my eyes that there are other great basses out there, this is my Favorite so far, Skyline DD ...Just can't beat their necks!!
Since I already love my DJ5, my inclination is to not mess with it, but giving it that treatment is interesting. If I ever pick up a second used Skyline at a good price, I will try it out.
I'm kind of feel like you Doc. I do not have the stickiness say I have had with Fenders. The Laklands finish is thin and satin feeling its not really an issues to me as well. I had read about the Lakland neck treatment and it interested me, but I'm not sure I wan to go thru all that to see if I like it or not.
Love the tiny frets!
I own 6 Laklands all Skylines, and love each and every one of them. This is the only brand of bass that I've never had any intentions on selling. I'm keeping all of mine and looking to get another 55-02.
Just took my first foray into the Lakland world. Brought home a used Skyline last night. Wow. Just wow. For the that kind of money? Seriously? Wow.

I used to have 18 basses, but now I have only one. The best of the best that survived and outlasted them all is my Lakland Skyline 55-64. Not sure how they do what they do, but their basses have a way of synching up with you that makes them indispensable.
I as well Love my Lakland. i have a custom 44-60 that is top notch. Put it this way, I sold all my other basses (had 13) and kept only 4. Lakland, Fodera, CS Fender, Vintage Fender.
The nut width on Lakland 5's is 1 13/16". That's by no means narrow, it's somewhere in the middle, between 1 3/4" on EBMM and G&L and 1 7/8" on brands like Fender and the standard Sadowsky nut (excluding Will Lee model). Ibanez 5's tend to be even narrower than EBMM. For me, the shape of the Lakland neck, and the nut width being not too wide, not too narrow allows me to play a 35" scale bass comfortably with very small hands. Obviously YMMV.

To be honest my blonde DJ5 is my #1, followed by my 55-60. The DJs and the 55-60 have Audere preamps. The 55-02 is a Korean Lakland with the LH3 system. The 55-AJs have both been upgraded with the Bart MK5 preamps.

Mine is just a simple 44-01 that I got off a fellow TB-er about 10-12 years ago, but I love it! It's a red one with a maple fingerboard, in case you're still out there, Internet buddy! 
And I just had a great experience with Lakland getting some parts. A-#1 people to work with.
I keep mine strung with stainless rounds and it gets a great punch. Just used it at a gig this past weekend!

After taking bass on as a genuine hobby axe around 2005, I went through dozens of basses: 4-string, 5 string, cheap, expensive, different woods, neck-through, body styles, electronics, whatever...
I will always respect Sadowsky for tremendous build integrity, an ingenious preamp and for offering several lines (NYC/Satin/Metro) that make price-point concessions without sacrificing quality. The great boutique makers - Pedulla, Fodera, Tobias, whomever - make great stuff. But based on overall ergonomics (for me) including neck and body shape and dimensions, playability, price point and musical satisfaction (although I tend not to favor the standard electronics), a used Lakland USA, with the 4-94 or 55-95 configuration, is my sweet spot in so, so many ways, including value for money. Hats off to the founders, and to all who now contribute to Lakland's continuing quality and viability!
And, especially, to Carl Pedigo.

I picked up a 55-02 Lakland at NAMM from Leo... What a nice guy !!
This is my first 5-string after playing 4 string bass for 30 years.....
I can not play any other bass now... It is my #1 bass... I get compliments from the tone of this bass and all the chics compliment me on how nice the bass looks....
No desire to go back to my early 70's 4 string basses....
I play it through SVT-4 Pro ...with a 8x10 and V4B cab .... when I reach for those low notes my drummer is complaining his rear molar teeth hurt...HaHa!!
I have not even tunned the bass once since I got it 2 months ago... I just whip it out from the case and start playing and it is has been perfectly in tune....
Now I make fun of my guitar player when I watch him switching guitars and constantly re-tuning for different songs.... I dont need to touch a thing...easy to play and easy to change keys and fingering...
