Lane Poors back in business

Yeah, the Q-Tuners are wound a lot hotter and have the stronger magnets.

I'm shooting for louder than a Poor, and a little warmer than a Q-Tuner.

I've already had a seymour duncan, a bartolini and a lane poor on my same flea bass
It's true, lane poor has the lowest output
but none of the two other pickup could get as clear sounding, and as sexy when having a good big amp :rolleyes:

It's hard to get a hot pickup with a clear tone. Usually the more wire you wind, the darker they get, with a more pronounced lower mid bump and upper mid peak.

Stronger magnets help, which is how I got a brighter tone from my neo humbuckers.

So, I'm happy that I now have a design with the same output as my regular pickups, and a very bright clear single coil type tone.

I'm doing similar things that Lane did, but a little different too. I think these are my favorite pickups now. :bassist:

IIRC, Lane Poors were never the best choice for players who insist upon playing passive instruments - and Lane Poor himself never suggested otherwise. That's what onboard preamps are for!

AFAIC, tone trumps output any day... :hmm:

I agree. I have just switch back to the Modulus bartolini pickup 20 minutes ago, and the difference is phenomenal!!! :eek:
the lane poor isn't a little bit low output, it's A LOT low output :eek:
on my volume level, a 1/4 with the bartolini equals 3/4 with the lane poor.

but every second I stopped playing, I said like a hundred time
'long live lane poor, long live lane poor...'

the barts can't get even a bit as clear and as beautifull as the lane poor, this is my opinion only
the bass doesn't even sound like it has an MM pickup with barts, but something else..

anyway, my lane poor is getting very old, it's from 96, and I'm very worried that it won't last forever :rollno: :crying:
I'm worrying that it is losing power over and over the years

so my point, having those pickups back in buiseness would be the best news for my bass carreer, because I'd be only using these pickups for the rest of my life

Yes I agree.

The design is ready now. All that clarity, and nice output too.

Right now they will be in the soapbar and MM sizes. I want to work it into a jazz size, but that takes a bit a shoehorning. ;)

I just have to update the web page.

There is always so many things to do.

He did make a side winder, and I think a wide aperture humbucker too. Some of the pickups, like the P bass, where fairly normal coils wound directly on a ceramic magnet, like an Alembic pickup.

Yes, all three pickups are similar in ways. Q-Tuners are low inductance pickups, since the coils don't have metal cores, just the magnets. Neo magnets and ceramic magnets have the same inductance as air.

LPs sound low inductance, but from what I have learned some did have steel cores, and made up for that with lower winds.

So I'm doing something similar to both of them. I'm using ceramic magnets in the sidewinders in the clips. The neos were too harsh sounding. I'm also using air coils, so they are low inductance, but I'm winding them hotter than LPs, and with different gauge wire than Q-Tuners. I have a few other tricks going on in there. My goal was to get a louder pickups than the LPs and a more even sounding pickup than the Q-Tuners, which I feel over accentuate the high end. So I have the highs, and added some lows.

So my sidewinders are kind of a mix of the two... probably closer to the LPs. :)

Other side winders are the old Bill Lawrence L-250 and the Gibson Ripper (also a Lawrence design).

I don't really get a true sense of a pickup from soundclips, but I have your pickups in one bass and Q-Tuners in another, and I like either better than Lane Poors I've played - some of that probably due to enjoying passive basses, and getting sufficient output without a preamp.

The Lane Poor MM pickups were generally humbuckers, correct? Although I haven't heard the narrow apertures, my favorite LPs are the wide apertures. IMO, the humbuckers were/are too focused on the lower midrange. The wides have a nice single-coil-like clarity to them.

Awww man... I'm so bummed. With all the mysticism surrounding LPs on TB, I was expecting magic fairy dust, or maybe some plutonium in there or something!
