Language Snobber on TB

I'm going to write this in two forms to emphasize my point.

Queens English (please read with posh accent :smug:):
One is rather irritated with the berating that the younger generation of talk bass receive when using the typed language they are used to on their instant messaging software and so called text messaging. It is ridiculous that men and women on this forum, get their "knickers in a twist" so much so that the thread is essentially de-railed. Ones general grammar tends not to be particularly bad if one is writing a letter to someone important such as the prime minister (which I have actually done), however if one is simply advising some one of something that one has knowledge on, and one does so quickly between practice tests for ones up coming exam's, then one may use colloquialisms that one is used to typing, such as "u" or "wat". One certainly does not expect to be attacked for being lazy with ones free time?!

ok now in more detail and in proper english, i was starting to get out of breath.
Basicly, I'm fed up of being attacked for using words such as u or gd, which are perfectly understandable, just because is incorrect grammer.
There are a few arguments for my point which i would like to point out but avoid too much detail:
1. evolution of the english language; you might not like it but its happening more and more I am seeing posters (particularly aimed and young people (who are of course the future)) using txt messaging slang, and shortening of words, it's going to become more and more comon use so get used to it
2. ease of entering, I type at about 60 words per minute maybe even alittle faster, when typing at that speed the time saved by writing u rather than you is achully significant
3. spelling, if i don't know how it is spelled, i spell it phonetically, if you can't read a phonetic spelling then please learn to talk, as you written english is clearly vastly superior to your spoken english.
4. snobbery, why pick up on something that you clearly understand but just don't like the way its written, we're all different, and we all have different manorisms and colloquialisms embrace people for who they are, including they're typed language, even if it is very comon or even Dawg speak.

Sorry about the rant, but i was fed up
I still love you all xx

Right - now for the serious answer...:eyebrow:

The point is on here - "you are what you write!!"

How we perceive you is by your writing style.

If your style is lazy and shows no consideration for those reading it - then we think of you as a lazy, inconsiderate person!

You can say what you like about things changing etc. etc.

But it's still the case that it is much easier to read well-written, clearly-spaced paragraphs - than it is to read jumbled jargon and buzz-words! :hmm:

If you don't give consideration to your readers - don't expect them to like it or give consideration to you!! :eyebrow:

2. ease of entering, I type at about 60 words per minute maybe even alittle faster, when typing at that speed the time saved by writing u rather than you is achully significant

How is typing "actually" as "achully" saving any time? It only makes you appear poorly educated.

the difficult bit w so many txters 2day tho is tht sometimes theyll go blathering on about w/e n ur not sure whn 1 sntnce starts n 1 ends levin u feelin rather confsed abt what is tryin 2 b said or if n fact ur missin a bit u need bc it all rather comes off as rndm nonsense n when all is said n done u end up hvng them rpt it all bc ur not sure what the pt was

Proper spelling and grammar allow for consistency and flow of thought that (hopefully) guide every reader down the same and intended path (though one might point to particular forms of postmodern literature). Grammar allows changes in pace and properly placed breaks to give you ease in reading. The grammar you would rather leave behind has not always been around to be the bane of your existence and has served us well, and for you to refer to rather recently placed adverts as your proof that all such language will in fact head towards such a nonsensical end is jumping the gun then a bit, isn't it? I understand you tire of having to repeat yourself, but is that not evidence enough that if one says something correctly the first time, there is little need to repeat or clarify? I speak these things generally and do not in any way attack you personally, sir.
It seems to me as though we are reverting back to cave drawings as our "modern" form of communication.

If you would like me to edit your Queen's English version, please let me know.

Sorry, but words like "gd" are NOT perfectly understandable - I have no idea this word is supposed to mean.

I will agree with the fact that American English is changing, but it is not for the better. Internet speak is a plague that is chipping away at decent conversation that conveys some sense of purpose and meaning. Some posts here at TB I can't even understand nor do I want to - when somebody says something like "OMG u rox my soxxors! LOL!", I automatically assume they are an idiot, much in the same way that I assume that people who don't speak correctly or curse every other word are idiots. These shortcuts of which you speak are nothing but pure laziness and reveal a lack of imagination. I can't be bothered to invest my time in deciphering what the hell you are saying if you can be bothered to even use complete words.

My point is pretty simple regarding this topic.
If you can't take the time to write a question in proper English, I don't have the time to answer it.

Seconded. I'm young but you'll never see me typing in "txtspk." The English language is such a beautiful thing... why must kids bastardize it? I'm pretty well read for my age, and I can just imagine all my old high school English professors and the literary greats of times past cringing when our language gets abbreviated like so many people do. It doesn't take too much longer to type how you speak in real life.

However, I do find internet acronyms making their way into my vernacular, but that's just to annoy people or make situations awkward.

LOL K THX!

It took me way longer to read the top section than the bottom section. Despite it being about half the size.

If you type anything like me it probably took you longer to type it too.

1337 speak is not even close to as easy to read as written english. I am not a grammer nazi, and I probably have committed numerous errors here. But I do use real works, and commas and periods to indicate pauses, and paragraphs to emphasize a change in ideas. This is not hard for me, it comes naturally, because I have put in the effort to learn to do it.

How do kids today write a research paper?

I guess thats the difference, I didn't learn to type using a cell phone.

+1

If you want people to be able to fluently read what you write, please write proper English.

(...says a guy who hopes that the people here take the time to read his posts as well, despite of the language errors that pops up every now and then...)

that is an example of a phonetic spelling that I have got used to due to not knowing how to actually spell actually, and it slips in occasionally by accident.

with regards to being poorly educated, it doesn't make someone an idiot by being poorly educated, it makes someone poorly educated, also intelligence is a wonderful thing and comes in forms other than just finesse with the english language, I happen to be quite accomplished at maths and music, however was always let down by english (particually in primary education and early secondary education I managed to get my grade up to an A for GCSE thanks to creativity), this obviously doesn't make me and idiot, yet due to snobbery and prejudice i am apparently seen as an idiot.

hell i'm also austrailian i clearly want a can of ice cold foster's and a barby. (i'm actually british as well and have never lived in austrailia i just have the citizenship.)

I could not agree more. In fact, if you can't take the time to type a question in English, you'll waste tons of time waiting for an answer from me - I won't even read past the first few words. It's clearly not important to you.

or maybe i'm just thick, or maybe that was quite ironic as you read the whole of this topic.
