if you want to participate here at talkbass successfully, you might consider making sure your input is understandable. non-native english speakers go through the trouble of communicating in a manner that the majority of the board can understand, i think all the wee texty-fingers who have grown up in the language can "slow" themselves down enough to be legible.

otherwise, most folks are going to just ignore you - why bother? i know as far as i'm concerned, if i wanted to decipher a barely legible code i'd be a spy.

and another thing. as someone who happens to love the english language, struggling through a linguistic abattoir like the below...

yeah, i missed the y key when re-typeing the title (it deleated my whole post) and i just copyd and pasted it in with out noticeing the lack of a y and it wudn't let me edit it after.

See how far you get in your career when you turn in a monthly report written in that "txtspk" crap. You should also try capitalization when it's appropriate.

that is an example of a phonetic spelling that I have got used to due to not knowing how to actually spell actually, and it slips in occasionally by accident.

with regards to being poorly educated, it doesn't make someone an idiot by being poorly educated, it makes someone poorly educated, also intelligence is a wonderful thing and comes in forms other than just finesse with the english language, I happen to be quite accomplished at maths and music, however was always let down by english (particually in primary education and early secondary education I managed to get my grade up to an A for GCSE thanks to creativity), this obviously doesn't make me and idiot, yet due to snobbery and prejudice i am apparently seen as an idiot.

hell i'm also austrailian i clearly want a can of ice cold foster's and a barby. (i'm actually british as well and have never lived in austrailia i just have the citizenship.)

I hope you don't personally feel chastised for many of these things, but, really, I think we're all trying to communicate with one another and get really frustrated when another doesn't properly grasped what we're trying to say. Would you agree? And so my frustration many times is that I can't quickly understand people who cannot spell well or have no basic grasp of grammar. It certainly wouldn't make me harsh towards someone who simply tries but has continued to have insurmountable difficulties with written and spoken language but I can't always tell that just from reading a page on an internet forum with people from all over the world.

I work for a world-renowned cancer hospital full of experts and am constantly frustrated with such highly, highly educated who e-mail like kids text message. It's just bothersome.

And your "shrimp on the barby" comment immediately draws me back to "Dumb & Dumber." Hilarious movie.

The point is on here - "you are what you write!!"

How we perceive you is by your writing style.

If your style is lazy and shows no consideration for those reading it - then we think of you as a lazy, inconsiderate person!

You don't get the opportunity in your outside life to take as much time as you want to compose a statement, and when you do your words are usually undercut (or aided unfairly) by your appearance, age, race, social background, etc.

Internet forums are a utopia of equality until you decide to become to lazy to properly spell, punctuate, abbreviate, or type. Why give that up?

Yes you are. You wouldn't be posting if you didn't want people to respect your questions by answering them intelligently, and read your posts with appreciation of your ideas. We may not be the Prime Minister here, but I'm guessing we have answers more frequently pertinent to your daily life as a bassist, and that's worth investing a few extra key strokes.

Being able to type properly and not like some damn "txt msg" indicates to me that you have at least a modicum of intelligence and might actually appreciate my response.

Typing in some garbled short hand not only makes you look unintelligible but also makes it harder to read your posts.

It took me way longer to read the top section than the bottom section. Despite it being about half the size.

If you type anything like me it probably took you longer to type it too.

It took me three times as long to type the first part.

(I rarely text "shorthand" unless I am trying to fit it all into one text.)

the only part of the language i don't use often is capitalization, as it annoys me. for the most part, the vast majority of my sentences are constructed in a proper manner- words spelled correctly, proper grammar, punctuation, etc.

although i could just translate everything i want to type into leet speak. the following is what i previously said.

corse the fact I learnt proper 4 finger touch typing when i was 10 is irrelevant, and it wasn't just a simple error of being in a rush (which is how I'm living atm - which i hate)

Well - no need to be in a hurry here - just post less frequently and take more time to check what you write, before hitting the "submit reply" key!

I do not mean to insult, but I genuinely believe the position on this matter taken by the OP is the reason the English language is slowly but surely going down the tubes.

So much time is taken by all of us here to gain a better understanding of our basses, how we play them, and how the sounds we make affect ourselves and those around us. Why not do that with the language we speak and write every day of our lives as well?

Being deprived of an education is one thing. Ignoring the one you've been given is very much another and should not be tolerated, much less accepted.

I'm going to write this in two forms to emphasize my point.

Queen's English (please read with posh accent ):
One is rather irritated with the berating that the younger generation of TalkBass receive when using the typed language they are used to (see edit A below) on their instant messaging software and so called text messaging. It is ridiculous that men and women on this forum, get their "knickers in a twist" so much so that the thread is essentially de-railed (edit derailed). One's general grammar tends not to be particularly bad if one is writing a letter to someone important such as the Prime Minister (which I have actually done), however if one is simply advising some one (edit someone) of something that one has knowledge on (see edit B below), and one does so quickly between practice tests for one's up coming (edit upcoming) exam's (edit exams), then one may use colloquialisms that one is used to typing, such as "u" or "wat". One certainly does not expect to be attacked for being lazy with one's free time?!

For the record, it takes me far longer to read the improperly applied text-type speech. I am a lot less likely to do so.
