No time to format a proper reply? Ludicrous! This whole thread and your 5 - 10 posts in it are nothing if not a complete waste of time. If you have something worth writing, write it so someone can read it.

Even your errors in this timewasting thread could have easily been fixed if you would just take the time to read what you are writing.

Its not very hard, and it doesn't take much time.

P.S. I write in complete sentences with real words on AIM. Start doing it, it gets easier.

It would take me longer to write one sentence in "txt" than it did to write this whole post.

Basicly, I'm fed up of being attacked for using words such as u or gd, which are perfectly understandable, just because is incorrect grammer.
There are a few arguments for my point which i would like to point out but avoid too much detail:
1. evolution of the english language; you might not like it but its happening more and more I am seeing posters (particularly aimed and young people (who are of course the future)) using txt messaging slang, and shortening of words, it's going to become more and more comon use so get used to it
2. ease of entering, I type at about 60 words per minute maybe even alittle faster, when typing at that speed the time saved by writing u rather than you is achully significant
3. spelling, if i don't know how it is spelled, i spell it phonetically, if you can't read a phonetic spelling then please learn to talk, as you written english is clearly vastly superior to your spoken english.
4. snobbery, why pick up on something that you clearly understand but just don't like the way its written, we're all different, and we all have different manorisms and colloquialisms embrace people for who they are, including they're typed language, even if it is very comon or even Dawg speak.

What it boils down to is this: WHAT you know doesn't matter if you can't communicate it clearly. Same for questions - your need is irrelevant if others cannot clearly understand what you want to know.

If you want to be understood, it's easy:

1) Keyboard carefully;
2) Use conventional and well accepted spelling and punctuation;
3) Make your communication clear and easy to understand.

If you refuse to do these things, YOU are the one who loses out. Your loss, not ours.

With all due respect, you misunderstood me. I do not mean to adapt the language to yourself, but to adapt yourself to the language. You don't just gloss over it and ignore it when you hit a wrong note on your bass, do you? Same concept.

Strange... so you're basically saying while you fix your mistakes in your bass playing, you're content to keep making the same ones over and over again in your typing...

To continue the comparison with bass playing, I would say what you're describing is much like playing a song incorrectly and instead of fixing the mistakes, you continue to make them over and over in the hopes that either no one will notice or they will humor you and let it go.

theyre not mistakes, to keep your metaphor going, what i'm doing is an obscure electro or jazz fusion line, using alittle bit of atonal improv, not everyone likes it, and somepeople think its a discrace to music, but its original and how i've always done it and i'm not gunna change what i like for people who I don't even know.

To jump in...some like to embrace the latest trendy way of bastardizing the English language (1337, ebonics, etc.) But some like to embrace proper English.
Personally, I couldn't care less how you speak. I also don't care how you type in your threads. I would not read one of your threads that contained an abundance of text speak (if it did) because it annoys me and I find it difficult to read.
But I have the option of clicking myself right out of that thread and continuing blissfully on about my day.
The only time it gets personal to me is if someone tries to speak/type/text me using that kind of language. Then I get very frustrated and annoyed and demand they either speak properly to me or not at all.

The bolded sections are my emphasis. How does using txtspeak cause language to develop? "Evolve" is a possible term for you to use, but don't be surprised when people resist what is more accurately "devolve"

Just to dig into your brain a little bit: what do you think of ebonics? There was a push a few years ago to actually legitimize it, which was roundly criticized and eventually dropped. Even those who could be considered to speak ebonics are embarrassed by the term.

Now, I live in New Orleans, which is predominantly populated by black people, and is also know for having some rather colorful dialects. I talk with people of all colors and all walks of life, but some of my fellow New Orleanians are completely unintelligible to me. I personally think that some of these people who speak in very thick accents/slang/mushmouth/ebonics (or whatever you want to call it) refuse to speak properly even though they can, just to mess with me. Some of my black friends down here speak quite a bit differently to me than they do to their black friends. Is it laziness or is it simply adapting to make oneself better understood? Methinks it's important for the speaker to make themselves understood to the audience, not the other way around.
