well...i got some money for my birthday...and with some more. i wanted to buy myself an apple laptop.

there a couple things i have thought about so far and i just need some outside opinions.

im a sophmore. and i dont know if should wait till im older. so i can get a better computer for college. but i was really looking forward to getting it. and i would really like a computer of my own now.

and also. i really want an apple. cause im using one now, no viruses, i would be able to transfer everything very very easy. and i just love mac opperating systems. but the pc laptop im looking at would be 600-700 compared to a 1000 dollar apple. but the pc would get viruses and all that. i wouldnt have all the programs i have on my mac now. and transfer of music photos etc would be hard.

any thoughts on either subject?

1. Do you NEED a laptop? For much less money, you can get a significantly faster, more capable computer. Laptops are inherantly sluggish considering speed is a tradeoff for portability. Are you going to be carring it everywhere with you?

2. PC vs. Mac - A properly maintained PC can be problem and virus free. Two years with my current laptop has yielded no problems, because I schedule virus scans every Wednesday night as I sleep, as well as regular spyware checks.

Like others have said, do you have a need for a laptop? I used to take mine back and forth to school all the time when I was doing my MSc. It was very convenient, but not necessary.

If you are going to go with an Apple, I would suggest purchasing it right after a revision occurs as this is when you get the most bang for your buck. The longer you wait after a revision, the more you can save by buying a similarly spec'd PC if all you are concerned with is hardware. For a laptop I would definitely be waiting until the Santa Rosa Centrino comes out (this month?) and see what this brings for revisions to the Macbook and Macbook Pro.

As for the PC vs Mac thing, I have both an iMac and PC laptop. I honestly prefer OS X to Windows. I do prefer it to Linux as far as user friendliness goes (I've had way too many issues with wireless cards and graphics cards in Linux on my laptop). For me Windows is fine as far as security is concerned in that I've never had a virus or significant spyware problems, though this has required me to do work to prevent. I honestly prefer using OS X because I don't have to bother with that stuff. Some people don't mind it, which is fine, but I find it annoying.
