They look like Thomastik Spirocore DB strings to me. A set costs more than some Squiers.
Yep, those 10 year old thomastik spirocore strings on my double bass (pics above) cost more than a squier bass indeed and also the david gage realist pickup under the bridge (I bought it from sam ash 34th str. for $219.99 new), costs more than a brand new squier affinity p (p/j pups configuration) bass ($199.99 new).

I never plugged it in, so I can't comment on its amplified sound. It sustained well.
For the few minutes I played it the weight didn't bother me. The body didn't seem like a very dense wood, but it was still plenty heavy due to the amount of wood.
The action was a bit high for my tastes. If I remember correctly, Mark was having some trouble with it and had quit playing it live some time before this picture was taken.
The cover band he has played in for several decades emphasizes entertainment over musicality. They play oldies, but the focus of the show is very visual. LOTS of props, hats, bubble machines, etc. They are extremely entertaining. The huge bass was built as a visual prop for the band.
A person would have to see Mark's studio to understand. It is like a museum of everything, but mostly music gear. He had a wall of amplifiers and more instruments than I could count. On one of the recordings I did we needed to record an organ part. Of course, Mark let me play it on his original late 60's Hammond B3 through an operating Leslie speaker. Our guitarist has recorded on a 71 goldtop that was there. He also recorded some parts on a Jerry Jones electric sitar and a 6/12 double neck of some sort.
He also has a 70's Music Man Stingray, 1969 Fender Precision, 1966 Fender Jazz, Hamer 12-string Bass,
Pedulla Pentabuzz and many other basses. He also has a 1966 Ric 360 12-string. The list is impressive.

I think the answer is "maybe". Their website and facebook page have been up and down, the owner, Skip Fantry, is reachable through Kalium strings though (was Circle K) though they also seem to be having some online issues as well.
