I recently got to see the band Lawrence live and, while their records are great, it really doesn't capture the essence and energy of their live show. I've seen hundreds if not thousands of shows over the years and these guys rank really high on the list terms of pure fun. They're all fantastic musicians, lead by a true virtuoso singer, but they are so good at keeping the music fun and accessible without being boring.
Not a lot of big solos or instrumental features but the bassist, Michael Karsh, is super funky and plays a lot of really clever and well-crafted parts which come through live far better than on the record. He used an octaver on some tunes to duplicate the modern pop synth bass vibe, which fit perfectly with their sound.
This is a band that has taken on Ticketmaster and Live Nation, made the top 40 without a major label deal, and I think they'll become a household name sooner rather than later. I got to see them in a 1200 seat room, which was sold out, and I wonder if they'll be in a venue twice that size next time. So, if you like fun, singalong soul pop that has incredible vocals and a really funky bass player, go check them out!
Here's a live cut of one of their more recent songs, which is clearly a tribute to Tower of Power.
