lead guitarist is a real jerk

You have a drummer and rhythm guitarist who can write good songs. The LG is the easiest person in a band to replace. They're a dime a dozen and some of them aren't a-holes. Just purge the guy and be done with it.

As far as getting gigs goes, you may the one who has to drive it. That's just the way it is sometimes. If you want the band to succeed, suck it up and taken that role.

I think I was in that band, just kidding. It’s a tough call but what I would do is search for a better band on the side and never end that search till the end of time.

A bit of a contrary opinion.

It's okay for him to not book gigs and not be the nicest person to be around if he's good - he can be the hired gun type.

But either he a) books gigs and complains about gigs or b) doesn't book gigs and doesn't complain about gigs. I don't think he can have it both ways. He can't be a full band member acting like a hired gun.

If he can't comply, boot him or leave.

We bass players are sociable and for the most part nice to be around people. We hardly have tendencies to rant for attention on stage and mostly like to just be the guys giving the foundation to the music or dragging along a drummer with bad pace ect..

In my band we're not professionals. We play solid originals. The music is good but we don't get booked (yet). We're still in the stage of making a name for ourselves. Previously the drummer changed and the new one is busy to settle in. The band leader and rhythm guitarist is a good guy. He writes good music. Apart from that unfortunately he isn't much more than a stick in the mud. However, I seem to be the only one who reaches out to actually get gigs. The lead guitarist is doing F%$k all. To rehearsals he basically shows up and doesn't even bother to bring his own instrument anymore instead renting one from the studio. He also likes to brag about his tinder success.
He then tends to complain about the gig's circumstances and doesn't like surprises.

When pointing out to him that on the other hand I will be surprised if one day he might come up with a gig himself the only text he sent back was: lmfao. I couldn't help to feel the need of rearranging his face the next time we meet. He is a good guitar player. That pretty much sums up the best I can say about this douche. How do you guys handle the lazy jackasses within your band?

Say "Good night Gracie".

Fire him!

I've come to the conclusion that all the guitar players are jerks........ One way or another.

Nah, there's some good ones. I know one right now, he's a great shredder, chicken picker - and an encyclopedia. And, he's in between. He's a stable family man too, but likes to have fun. If I weren't so overbooked, I'd start a new project with him. The problem is, fair lead guitarists are a dime a dozen, and once a band gets started, they aren't going shopping for a better one, because you just need one good enough. He'll get picked up soon, after (like the OP) some jerky LG gets fired.

I had to read the thread because I don't remember if I was the OP or not! But I could have been. I left, ended up getting back with the drummer and a great GP, haven't looked back since. Start looking for another GP, there are indeed a few good ones out there.

Either he goes, or you go. 31 responses in and not a single "have a talk with him" response. This guy probably abuses everyone in his life. I have nothing to add to this conversation.

Oh wait, yes I do. He can't even be bothered to bring his own guitar to practice? One he gigs (or would gig) with?

If you're getting the gigs, congratulations, you're the band leader. Act accordingly, fire the guy, and bring harmony (no pun intended) to the band. If this guy is as big a jerk as you say, the other guys will eventually get tired of it and find another situation. Then you'll be replacing members anyway, but likely still be stuck with the guitar player.

Dump him. I dont care if you play like EVH, if your attitude sucks and you are a douche, jerk, addict or other, you are out. There are a lot of GPs out there...
This, this, and this. There are a million guys out there looking for a band.

And for those of you who are saying the OP is also being a jerk for saying someone is a douche and wanting to smack the guitar player, get over it. It's a figure of speech to describe how angry he is about the guy's behavior. Wanting to hit someone, and actually doing it, are two very different things.
