Figured I'd provide an update as well. I just returned from our memorial gig, which was simultaneously celebratory, sad, and cathartic. We kicked things off with four of our originals with our deceased leader's niece on vocals, after which multiple bands, acoustic duos, and solo acoustic players did their thing. One of the solo dudes, an old friend of Mike, played one of Mike's originals that used to be a band tune, which was really cool. Our drummer's two cover bands played excellent sets, and for me the musical highlight was a totally ripping instrumental power trio. Some of their stuff sounded like Wired era Jeff Beck.
We then closed with a short set, after which we invited everybody to come up and join us for "Spirit in the Sky," which worked surprisingly well. Lots of folks participated, including Mike's sisters. Mike's relatives were thrilled with the music, the turnout, and the very positive vibe -- and I think Mike would have been thrilled with it too. We were all still mourning, but it was a wonderful experience.
So, for those of you dealing with something like this, a memorial show can be fantastic. We were blessed with Mike's niece who could organize the gig, get other musicians, and take over on lead vocals, but however you can get it done, I think it's a good idea.
