lead singer is addicted to karaoke...

So we just celebrated my cousin's son's 4th birthday yesterday (the one who was born at the reception the dance floor). Billy, Jr. had wanted one of those video game themed parties (where one of those huge trucks pulls up in front of the house and all the kids go and play games in the back of it and stare at screens for hours on end), but my cousin insisted on karaoke. So on the day of the party, the KJ set up outside in the backyard.

About 12 of Billy Jr's classmates from his preschool class came to the party, along with family members (I was there, uncle Bill was there, etc.). Billy insisted that he kick off the party by singing Ringo Starr's "I Am The Greatest". One of the kids, being a wiseass, decided to yell out "Freebird" in the middle of the song. Now, how a 4 year old knew what "Freebird" was is beyond me... guess his parents were Skynrd fans? Anyhow, my cousin stop singing, stares the kid down, and says (over the mic), "SHUT YOUR MOUTH WHILE I AM SINGING YOU DISRESPECTFUL LITTLE JERK" The kid flipped off my cousin. Well, cousin throws the mic down and takes a run at the kid. Unfortunately, Billy stepped on a shovel (the metal part), and the handle came right up and smacked him in the face. Billy already being slightly drunk loses conciousness.

I am typing this in the lobby of the hospital right now as Billy gets his face sewn back on.

Any suggestions on what I might could do to help him? I'd like to start a band again.

Nah, bro. People need to want to change. There's no magic. You're rehashing the past.

Karaoke for 4 year olds? Your cuz is a narcissist. You might try to spend time with his son. He's already learning that he doesn't matter.

Pretty obvious to me that your singer is a full-on flake who also has major control issues.

He likes the karaoke scene better than your band because he can control/manipulate more of the variables in a karaoke situation. Also it's an ego stroke for him, especially if the "competition" he goes against is as dreadful as it sounds. On the karaoke scene he's a big fish, on the band scene maybe not so much.

The obvious answer is to dump his ass and find another singer but if that's not an option for you I guess all I can say is roll with it and hopefully while he's doing his karaoke diva act he's not dropping the name of your band so that you all don't get tainted in the process.

This makes the most sense, EGO is the key, he's the spotlight.

Why I quit one of the bands I was in, lead singer's ego.

My suggestion is to beat him within an inch of his life, wait for him to recover, and do it again.

So, I am still trying to get the band back together. I thought these last couple of months would have been a great time to woodshed, due to the karaoke bars in town having been shut down due to Covid. No such luck. Billy ordered a brand new professional karaoke system from Musician's Friend (ironic, huh?). He is now hosting karaoke 5 nights a week from his living room. It's a BYOB situation but essentially the local karaoke bar has moved to Billy's living room. The worst part is that he refuses to wear a mask, and does not require "patrons" at his home to wear them either. I called him the other day, and he told me that all the masks he has tried make his face break out in hives, and that if a talent agent happened to sneak into his house one night to scout out karaoke talent, it would disqualify him. Well,. now that he has exposed himself and everyone else to Covid, I am afraid it's going to be a while before I can get him over to start rehearsing again. Any suggestions?

No Sir, sadly this is not a joke. I've been fighting to get our band back on track now since 2011, and my cousin just won't stop. Due to Covid his favorite karaoke haunts are now closed, so he has now decided to visit Florida where he claims restrictions are looser. He posted a FB live video of himself at Spring Break last week, singing karaoke by the pool to a bunch of drunken college students. I plan to have him quarantine for 2 weeks upon return and then we are going to have a real heart to heart about this band and priorities.

I realize this thread has been going for ten years now. But I have to say is that my initial response is to question why any one in a band would be upset about someone earnestly honing his chops by singing in front of audiences.

Reading through, I get that this guy has other issues, if this is all to be believed. But what do you all think singers are supposed to do? We instrumentalists go out to jam nights and play our basses, and nobody complains that we're somehow disrupting band life by playing our instruments on stages around town. Why do singers have to be viewed so differently? I nearly fell off my chair when I read that this takes time away from "woodshedding." How does getting up in front of an audience and actually doing the thing take away from anything?

So, back to ten years ago, the thing I found most weird was the obsession over keys. What all of us need to understand, though, is that singers need to sing within their range, and this is a legit thing. However, every freaking karaoke version of anything I've ever heard is in the original recorded key. If you actually know the song, you shouldn't need to worry about what key it's in. You can sing it, or you can't.

OK, that is all. Resume zombie thread rehash :)
