lead singer is addicted to karaoke...

We went to karaoke Sat. night, but my cousin demanded we turn around and go to the other karaoke dive down the block. I asked him, "why?". He told me that he didn't like the particular KJ who was hosting that night. I asked him what his issue was with him. He told me that the KJ refuses to call him by his full name when he gets up onstage (first, middle, and last, and III.). So we went to the bar where the KJ humors him and calls him by his birth certificate handle.

I am finding there is a culture in the karaoke community that I do not like, but much like a trainwrecks, it's hard to not watch and be fascinated. Ive noticed that there are a LOT of people who go to karaoke, and pretend they are legit singers, and talk about how theyre going to cut an album, or audition for Idol. These people are seriously dellusional.

I always had that impression about most karoke "addicts", but after all, not everyone can work in a band environment.

Personally, I'm shocked to hear that there's such a thing as the karaoke community. I always though that it was just something people did after having one too many to drink, only to regret the next morning.

Sort of like with women's relationship with me.

You would be suprised. There are many people who do just go to karaoke for fun, have some drinks, sing a couple songs, laugh at the drunks, etc. But there is a large group within the "karaoke community" that are dellusional beyond belief.

Ill give you a few shining examples.

There was a girl in her early 20s at the bar one night. She handed the KJ a cd with an instrumental track on it. It wasn't a karaoke cd she handed him, but instead was the instrumental track of a song the girl had cut at a local studio. The music was generic... decent enough I suppose. She got up on the mic and started talking about this was her debut single, and that she is going to record a full album. Not a soul in the bar paid her one bit of attention while she talked or sang. But this chick thought she was on Star Search or something.

A guy in his mid 40s or so gets up a sings some random country song. During the instrumenal break, he starts talking on the mic about how his band used to play this song when they were "on tour" back in the day. He was dead serious too. He even talked about his band. Again, no one in the crowd gave a hoot.

A guy in his late 20s or so gets up to sing some goofy song. Jason Mraz or something. I don't remember. Hell, might have been Justin Beiber. I dont follow pop music. Anyhow, after he sang, and he was ok, he sits at the table and starts talking about all these band auditions he is going on, and how all these bands want him. And yet.... he's bragging to complete strangers at karaoke.

Yep, these examples are what I mean by dellusional people.

No more strange than the "Pez Community" represented by a guy on Pawn Stars.

My wife likes to throw me a big bbq for my birthday. Last year I got enough musician friends together to have a jam in the backyard. Two acquaintances asked if they could bring friends. Sure, the more the merrier. They arrived late, when the jam was almost done. They were not happy because we had no Scotch. 3 different kinds of beer, 3 different kinds of wine, vodka, whiskey, rum, but no Scotch. They said we need to go buy Scotch, and their friend Mike is a wonderful singer, can they bring him to sing a tune? I said sure. They took forever to find Scotch, so when they finally got back w/ Mike the PA etc. was already broken down. They said Mike has all his karaoke gear in his car, don't worry I'll pay to have him sing at your party, it'll be my birthday present to you. There were about 10 people left at the party at this point. I thought, "who the hell are you again?" but said, "ok sure." I was reassured many times that they would pay Mike. I assisted Mike and reset up my own cd player and monitor for him because he seemed like such a big deal and I am polite. He was not good - it was like having one of my Dad's random friends attempt to sing. He sang 6 or 7 Sinatra songs to me for my birthday, which was 10 too many. We are polite so we did not laugh in his face. The singer for one of my bands was still there, so he asked to sing an Elvis tune, nailed it, and I think at that point even Mike started to get the message, but not really because I was assured again that I would not have to pay Mike. When they left I offered a plate of leftovers, they took entire trays, which is fine because I didn't really want to clean up, but wow, just wow. That was my run-in with karaoke culture. My next bday party is this weekend, can't wait to see who turns up! :hyper:

So last night my cousin and I, and a friend of ours (i.e. designated driver) went to a pizza place in the next town over (bout 30 minutes from our town). They have Thurs. karaoke night. Decent beer prices. Good pizza. Sounded like a bearable night... at first..

So we're sitting there in the outside eating area (yes, they put the karaoke guy outside..lol). It's very laid back. My cousin is at peace. Everyone is laid back. Calm before the storm..

*The Roy Orbison guy from the other bar comes out with a beer and sits at a table*

About 20 min. later he gets up and sings "Oh, Pretty Woman", and does a rousing version of it. My cousin started pounding his fists into the table while he sang. He looked at me and muttered, "I know he followed me out here, just to steal my thunder". I laughed, "I doubt it, dude.." He then just leered at me, snarled, and took a sip of his whiskey.

He immediately marched up to the DJ, tipped him 5 bucks, and got right up on the stage, and sang.... "Oh, Pretty Woman". He stared at the Roy Orbison guy the whole time he sang, but sadly, the Roy guy was hitting on a waitress young enough to be his daughter. After he was done, he yelled into the mic, "THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT... THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT". The Roy guy then stood up and laughed at him and said, "well come show me hows its done sweetheart". My cousin charged him, but tripped over a cable and face planted into a table. The entire bar laughed at him. I was mortified. At the end of the night, I made him apologize to Roy. He did.

You need to take some videos of your cousin.

lol. I should. I may just write a movie or a book instead. I doubt he'd appreciate the 15 minutes of fame, if I put him on YouTube.

Saturday night we went to karaoke again, but this time we actually went to a Mexican joint, where they had karaoke set up inside by the bar (there is a bar section, and a dining section).

My cousin gets up to sing, and a couple of Mexican guys are ragging on him, because during the instrumental part of the song he was doing, he started talking about his past career as a touring musician (and we all know how seriously people take pro musicians at karaoke). Now, I can't righly say they were ragging on him, as the Mexican gentlemen were speaking Spanish, but it did look like they were laughing at him and mocking him a bit (and justly, I might add...).

So my cousin is pissed. He tells me he's going to go have a word with the Mexican guys. I tell him, "thats a bad idea.... ". He asks "why". I say, first of all, they may not even speak English, so you'll be wasting your breath, and secondly you are in a Mexican joint, and these 2 guys know every damn person who works here, so why would you go mess with a dog in his own backyard.

So my cousin gets up on stage again, and dedicates "La Bamba" to the 2 Mexican guys. He says, "hey... Senor' loudmouth and Senor' no talent over there.. since you chicos dont have the cajonies to get up here and sing, this one is your you...". He went onto sing LaBamba. He messed up and mis pronounced every other word in the song. He even grabbed a sombrero off a ladies head who was walking by the stage (it was her birthday, so she got to wear the sombrero). During the song he was dancing in a sombrero screaming "OLE... OLE.... OLE" at 2 Mexican guys. They were almost peeing in their pants in hysterics during the song. Couisin then grabbed a table cloth off the empty table by the stage and started waving it at the guys... yelling, "ONDELAY... ONDELAY". The guys almost fell on the ground laughing. After the song, cousin sat down and said, "I really showed them, eh". I looked at them, and I said to him, "its always about you isnt it Ritchie... what about me... what about Bob". He looked at me and said, "who is Bob".

The crap I endure.

@Rocker949- ha thanks man.

An interesting thing to note. Cousin has expressed interest in being in a band, again... however... I am skeptical. The only time he likes to talk about being in a band, is at karaoke (ironically). I dont get it. He tells everyone at karoke who will listen to him that he is going to start a band, and tells them all about his music past. Yet... he's telling this to karaoke singers.... not even any musicians among them that Im aware of. Just drunks singing at a bar. I do not get it. Never will. And never will play in a band with him either!
