lead singer is addicted to karaoke...

I spent a good 30 minutes reading this and actually laughing out loud.

Is there anyway you could youtube him for us?

This is broadway worthy.

Ill ask him ;)

Seriously, Sat. got ugly, folks.

Cousin and I went to the karaoke bar with a couple friends. For some reason the DJ skipped over him in the rotation. If I am not mistaken, cousin had gone out to the car or something, and missed his name being called. Anyhow, he came back in, and "demanded" to sing next. The DJ told him next go-round.... well, cousin got up there to sing when it was his turn again, and all of a sudden, when he got the mic, he started plugging the karaoke bar around the corner. The DJ cut the mic off, and the 2 of them stepped aside. The wait staff was standing there. We were standing there. He proceeds to tell the DJ that he is the star here, and that he runs the show, and that the DJ is jealous of him. The DJ is laughing. The wait staff is laughing. Cosuin then hauls off to go hit the DJ... we grabbed him, and got him in the car. On the way home, he went on and on about deserving more respect.

I told him if you want respect as a singer, join a damn band and stop this insane karaoke madness. I told him, straight up, no one takes you serious as a karaoke singer. Karaoke is for drunks to make #sses out of themselves. He told me he is already a star, and doesnt want to start from the ground up in a band. I told him he wasnt a star... but a joke. And that he cant hack it in a band. He began crying with rage. I told him to shut up.... and be ready to jam next weekend, bc he's is CUT OFF from karaoke.

Good job sacking up and giving it straight to cousin. Can't have been easy.

I read #139 and get that he's blood and your friend and all, but blood and friendship has limits and it looks like you reached it.

This is textbook addictive behavior and if cousin didn't hit rock bottom yet, he's damn close. He needs help with some significant issues and unless you're a licensed therapist, you're not the guy he's gonna get it from. All you're doing is enabling him and bringing more pain on yourself. I respect that he's blood, but it's time for boundaries and it looks like you've drawn the first one. Well done.

Now you gotta enforce that karaoke cut-off. be strong. Good luck, you can do it and you'll be glad you did.

Thanks man. You know... I don't know which one, but he is on some RX right now. It's helped some, but I need to talk to his parents and see what they think too. They know he's lost his mind. Sad thing is, he used to not not be this way as a kid and 20 something. This is a later in life meltdown.

I was like, "dude, NO... were at karaoke.. who gives a crap.. the guy before you just butchered 'Cum on Feel the Noize', while his hearing aids were feeding back through the PA.

ROFL! So true, so true.... If he cant get it, he simply is a lot of french fries short on a Happy Meal. Thanks for posting this thread. :)

We can't wait to hear what happens at the karaoke bar next weekend.

Well, funny you should ask....

I got duped into going again (I have no wife or kids... no current band... and nothing better to do)... but this story is actually different than the rest, because it's not so much his usual behaviour, but the story is just as frustrating....

So there is this old cat daddy at the bar Saturday night. This is an older African American gentleman (probably 50s or 60s, age-wise). This guy has the most insane hair ever... think James Brown in the 70s (when he had the mustache). He also had an Amish beard (ie full beard with the mustache part shaved off). He also had a rubberband at the end of his beard... like a ponytail, but on his beard. He had a plum colored leather coat too. Also had several earrings in both earrings.

So the guy gets up to sing a Temptations song, and does a great job. My cousin insisted the guy was famous for some reason. Later I found out cousin had talked to the guy at the bar, and the guy had told him he was a songwriter, and had written many hits for the Supremes, The Tempations, and the Spinners. He also claimed to have written a song called Buckets of Fire for Elvis Presley.... in 1979.

Cousin was just enamored with this guy, and proceeded to tell him how great of a singer he was, and that he was a pro musician too.

What I wanna know though is this..

Why does karaoke bring out these kinds of hacks? Seriously.... it's like a huge magnet for people who think or pretend to be legitimate musicians, but are not at all....

I have only been to a karaoke thing once in my life and it was a trip. Our band had just played a private party at a condo, then saw a bar next door and decided to stop in for a beer. Well they had karaoke going on and our singers started kidding around about getting up and singing something. The people getting up were clearly not good singers, so the one of our guys finally starts looking through the song list. He picks "I Think I love You" by THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY. I am almost mortified to be seen with him at this point, he is like "dude trust me", just watch what happens.

So he approaches the DJ, and the guy says, " you don't want to sing that, it's really hard". Again, our singer says "trust me" (one of his favorite phrases).

So he gets up and starts singing, first off I never remembered how complicated that song is, it has a tricky melody that seems to change keys a lot. Within seconds, girls start screaming and several literally are kneeling at his feet. He nails the song and hams it up and stole the show. So he comes back and sits down, and is all like, "see, you should always trust me". I am still in awe to this day.

Ok, guys, apoligize for the lack of updates here... I figured since it was the holidays, Id share a holiday karaoke story from last Sat. night. Holidays are tough for me, being single, with family out of town, but this was.... errr, interesting.

We went to the karaoke bar Sat. night. They were having a Christmas themed karaoke contest. Cousin did a so-so version of Feliz Navidad (he had on an awful snowflake sweater and Santa cap). Another guy did Blue Christmas, and he had on a Santa suit (now, he was spot on bc he was about 70 and had a white beard). Another notable contestant was a hipster-ish chick who did The Hanuakah (sp) Song by Adam Sandler.

Cousin did a fine job on his song, and he told me, "I got this one in the bag". 1st place was a 25.00 gift card to either Wal Mart or Target (I forget). The girl got up and sang her Sandler song. The crowd went nuts, and when cousin realized this, he yelled out during the song, "THIS ISNT A CHRISTMAS SONG.... DISQUALIFY HER... DISQUALIFY HER NOW". The bouncer had to come silence him. I was red in the face by this point.

The Santa guy did a great job, and won the contest. He and his girlfriend got up onstage to be presented their gift card. The wife was about 70 with white hair also, a sweet couple for sure. Cousin stood up and went to shake Santa's hand when he got offstage, and then he grabbed the wife, and locked lips with her. He then grabbed the mic and said, "LOOK WHO JUST GOT SOME SUGAR FROM MRS CLAUS... HOHOHO". The woman then ran up onstage and locked lips with my cousin again. Santa grabbed a bar stool and went to crack cousin with it, but the bouncer caught the stool. Cousin is now banned.

I KJ when I don't have a bass gig. I have mentored a few female KJ's and help them startup their businesses, show them how to get the most out of their equips, run sound, etc. My band has gained a fanbase through my karaoke work. Never lose out on an opportunity to network. Karaoke is serious bidness around here.

i used to KJ myself back in the 90's, the money was remarkably good (250 for the night and free beers) more than i made at gigs usually lol. Even got a couple sub gigs singing and playing bass out of the deal. These days I prefer writing my own stuff or collaborating with the guitar player on songs
