I think sidetracking this thread into a RIC bashing thread detracts from an otherwise interesting build. Although I've been banned on the RRF (something of a badge of honor I think) I still lurk occasionally, and have seen no evidence that they've even noticed this bass. Since the OP is building this bass for herself, it's unlikely she'll be noticed by John Hall either. The person who was selling the templates to build the bass did however violate international trademark law, and deserves whatever they got that made them stop. Since the owner of a trademark is responsible for policing it's enforcement, they can lose rights to that trademark if they don't show due diligence in enforcing it. Now, back to our regularly scheduled program......

In point of fact, I was not exactly Ric bashing, but I was bashing Mr. Hall and his pursuit of anything that even looks remotely like a Ric, whether or not it affects his company.
Borders on mania imo. (Not the first time it's happened on this thread or on TB, and likely not the last.)
Certainly going after new copies, or counterfeits, is fair game, and more power to 'em. But going after sellers of decades old items is just silly and somewhat mean spirited imo.

Plus, Hall and Co. have contacted some builders on TB and elsewhere in the past regarding the intents of those builders, even when same have indicated a personal build with no intent to sell.

Perhaps Ric should spend more time on QC issues and less on the dogged pursuit of such non-issues (That was Ric bashing.) :)

Hell, I even like some Rics. Wouldn't buy one, though. If I lucked into one I would definitely mod it to my tastes.

The bass mapleglo is building looks great, and will likely play and sound great, and that's really what matters. Doesn't mean she should lower her Hall monitor, so to speak. ;)

I would be amazed if RIC gave a flying whatever about this bass. I could be wrong but I don't think they've ever gone after stuff made for personal use. I remember forum member John Kallas made builds using RIC designs a while ago and he was contacted warning him from making more to sell, but I don't remember any problems with personal use.

Like Aceonbass said it's good to veer off of this topic and let mapleglo take charge -- her build is awesome and should be the thread's focus. :)

The template I got was for a 4001, and I have the 4003. I never compared the two models side by side, but the template upper and lower horns are wider than the 4003, which are visibly thinner. The overall shape is pretty good though. Overall, I'm happy with the template, as it's close enough to be recognizable, but different enough for a little variety. I'd be interested in a comparison to a 4001. I know the horn shapes varied over the years.

So the bridge parts came in today, and I installed the third spring.

I strung it up and the string tension is still pulling the arm into the body.

The string tension is really pulling on that bridge. There is almost no forward motion to be had.

This is getting frustrating. Even the folks over at Bass Tremolo Fanatics are stumped. I'm using the strings from my 2011 Fender MIM Precision, that I replaced with Rotosounds. I'm wondering if I should buy a set of light gauge strings to try. Is it safe to assume that lighter gauge strings offer less tension?

In other news, I figured since I put the bridge back on, I'd also throw the pickups in and hear if it makes sound. It does. I have to install the foam/springs to raise them up a bit though.

Yep, if you mean to use the same kind of string (can't make the same assumption if you're going from nickel rounds to steel flats, etc.).

For example light gauge Chromes are around the same as TIs, 35 lbs/string, but heavy gauges are more like 50 lbs/string, so you end up gaining 60 lbs tension or so. I figure lighter gauges will perform more sensitively with a tremolo anyway.

There's nothing weird about the method you used to install the bridge right?

You could drill and tap two more holes next to the forward screw of the middle spring to put more tension on the springs. Those seem like some pretty weak springs to hold against the string tension of a 34" scale bass.
