Leather, oil rubbed bronze.... cabinet?

Tried searching the "sound quality first cabinet design" got nothing. Would you please explain. I can guess at what someone was trying to do....but...

Otherwise, nice build quality!

...also guessing you can remove any number of the rear slats for open back tuning?

Well hell .... I will explain. BUT please note that it often opens up cans of worms.... Something I won't participate in.

I can help some readers by just stating that I have been designing and building high end audio speakers for 40 years, for companies like JBL, Polk, Klipsch, Energy, etc... and my specialty is/was cabinet vibrations and acoustical material engineering.

ANY and every vibration made by anything other than the actual speaker cone itself IS a type of distortion. Cabinet vibrations of any level smear the end sound. Every vibration also removes end volume, as any energy outside of the actual cone moving is wasted energy (watts).
This cabinet firstly was properly designed for the Retro 30 speaker"s exact TS parameters. 99% of Pro Audio does not care or even know!
Just put the driver in a cabinet that marketing says will sell. This is designed for flat FR from this cabinet size/driver combo.
And then the use of Baltic Birch plywood... it's CRAZY stiff and strong, without any of the hollow voids in regular plywood. It was all hardwood layers, with no filler wood layers. It has each sheet glued with crossed grain on each layer for strength. It will not warp, it's crazy strong, and is lighter in weight than MDF.
Sound quality first means that ZERO considerations were on the table, concerning weight, durability for gigging, etc. This is a "show" cabinet for his music store. Something for people to look at, AND his own personal guitar cab for his own practice. Never to be gigged with or hauled around.

Looks like sometime from the 50's and 60's.. I'd like hear the difference between Birch and Pine.. doubt it'd make a difference..

:roflmao: You can easily measure the difference in vibrations and in the FR in the room. Hardwood is a terrible speaker cabinet material. It isn't consistent in the Janka hardness scale. And the varying figure, knots, defects, etc are terrible.
Consistency and an inert material is what you want.

This is patently false, 99% of the pro audio is very much in tune with TS parameter design metrics and do in fact care about designing proper cabinets. If you really designed for JBL, you would know how ridiculous your assertions are.

When you say FRFR, if that's the Warehouse Guitar Speaker Retro 30 part, there's nothing FRFR about it as it's a heavily voiced guitar speaker.

The bottom panel has the input jack, and isn't removed. The other two panels are removable.

When the panels are removable, how does this change the claimed FRFR response of the system? Which way is claimed to be FRFR?

Except that I do have the degrees and I do have the experience (in the pro audio industry designing for the big boys), and I have done work for the company that you claimed paid no attention to TS parameters yet I know first hand that they very much did.

When you make a claim that a company or industry doesn't do something that it actually does, and the claim is blatantly false, you should be prepared to get called out for perpetuating false information.
 
It'd be nice if folks who've spent their lives learning and pursuing audio expertise, yet have differing opinions, could start out by accepting the fact that we won't always agree on stuff. I still build with MDF rather than plywood because of its perceived lack of resonance compared to plywood, and especially to hardwood. Yeah, my speakers are ridiculously heavy, and yes, MDF is a mess to work with and not inherently strong, and yes, you can make great speakers out of plywood... or a lot of other materials.

Physics and acoustics are facts. T/S parameters are basic building blocks of any speaker design, and stating that major manufacturers are unaware of them is just silly. Sure, manufacturers may place more emphasis on saleability, cost-cutting, appearance, and convenience/ease of use than a boutique or hobbyist builder, but that doesn't mean they don't know what they're doing.

@Cullen G - you've built some beautiful systems, and spared little expense in driver, crossover, and cabinet components in a lot of them. That, in and of itself, means that you are a skilled woodworker and have enough money to buy those things. That's all it means. Don't take that the wrong way... Your systems may INDEED sound wonderful and rival the best there is, and you may very well be a world-class designer and acoustician, but we can't know based upon pictures and your assertions. I WOULD love to hear your work.

The thing is, @agedhorse IS a known quantity. He's a respected designer for some of the top amplification producers in the bass world and elsewhere, and a frequent knowledgeable and helpful contributor to this forum. We KNOW he knows what he's talking about. That's not to say he's always absolutely, infallibly correct, nor always beautifully diplomatic when challenged or when challenging strange assertions (NO one is, right?), but he's always worth listening to.

Be nice. Discussions don't have to be arguments nor contain personal judgements.

Exiting stage left instead of taking the heat from a REAL pro is probably your best move in this situation.

Lol. Nobody can just say "looks cool, good luck". Always teaching moments and gotchas.
I get the point, but mostly I come here to learn...which involves asking, questioning design choices, reading questions from others, and responses from folks who know more than I do. All of that is welcome. What's the point of simply validating everything? I'll take all the beneficial "teaching moments" I can receive, and will continue to question things I don't understand, don't agree with, or know to be false. Why not?
