Legos! (Nostalgia)

Lego is all my son spends his money on, he's fixated with the Lego City line...has nearly all of it, and proud to say he bought 90% of it himself, with money he saved from xmas and birthdays and such...he's really good at the creative side of it, along with Knex kits...

Add to that the world of Minecraft, which he also creates with with much intensity, making environs so fully realized and intricate, at 10 years old...dunno if that's the norm with children these days, but he truly blows my mind with it.

Nope, hard plastic that looked like bricks. Had tabs like the Legos do and long, short, doors that opened, windows, roofs, etc.

Nowadays, Lego seems to just cash in on franchise after franchise...

I heard a news story about this on the radio. I guess Lego was starting to lose market share to the knock off blocks so they completely switched emphasis to the franchise route to distinguish themselves. It worked commercially, but cut out about half of the nostalgia factor for those of us that had the earlier Lego sets. Then again, my nostalgia has never gotten me to buy a Lego set so I can't really blame them.

I loved those pirate ships of the late 80's. Soooooo cool.

I enjoyed Lego as a kid, but I was more into the Lincoln Logs. Always wanted an Erector set, but never did get one....

Fond memories of Lego can quickly turn to hatred of the little things. The first time you step bare-foot on one of your children's Legos in the middle of the night while heading to the bathroom, you'll know what I mean....

Oh man, one time in high school, I was walking around I winter boots, but it felt funny. A rock or something was inside. I took my boot off and found a blue 2x2 Lego block inside...

Man, Legos were the bomb. I had a huge tub of them when I was a kid. I had a bunch of different sets and after I built them, I'd break it apart and put them in the tub and build something completely new. So much fun. My favorite set was the giant white star wars clone trooper gunship thing I got after the second episode came out, I was the coolest kid in elementary school. Chick magnet.

We Americans refer to LEGO not only as the company, but as the individual bricks we used to build, hence why we often pluralize it.

Most places outside the Americas refer to the bricks as Lego, which is used for the plural. It's used a mass noun, as said, just one of those things, Legos sounds weird!

It was just a couple of months ago I got a Lego Batman set for the Batmobile (set had that, a bank vault and Two-Face and his truck!) Had fun assembling it and now I got a kick-ass Batmobile!!!

It's settled. Bought a few old space sets off eBay... Maybe they will give me some cool design ideas for my next arcade space shooter.

Never thought I would buy Lego(s) for myself again

I had a ton of Legos (in fact, I think that I still do, buried in my closet at my father's). Most of my blocks were from the Basic series; although I had some of the pirate and medieval stuff too. I think I had a few from the space series too. I remember there was this monorail set that I thought was completely awesome. I even had one set of Duplos; even though I was really already too old for Duplos at the time.

In America, when referring to primary and secondary education, we put the grade number before the word "grade," i.e., 10th Grade. Calling it "Grade 10" sounds wierd.

Only primary school differs all that much, where it is called Primary 1, Primary 2 etc. For high school, college and university it's 1st year, 2nd year etc.
