Double Bass Lehle Parallel vs Craig Biesele Amplification Systems

Hey friends,

I am looking into a 2 pickup blended sound as I am not satisfied with my current realist sound. The realist is ok, but I think something with a little more grit would be ideal. I really love the sound Viktor Krauss gets in the East/West Bill Frisell live recording, so after a little research, it seems as though Viktor uses a blend of both Piezo and Magnetic pups. I am interested in some combination of the Krivo Magnetic pickup and the Lehle Parallel L signal blender or the Craig Biesele combination Magnetic Pickup and Pre-amp/Mixer. My questions are these:

1) Speaking specifically about the pick-up, are folks overwhelmingly for or against either of these? Reasons?

2) Does the Lehle Parallel L and the Biesele pre-amp/mixer ostensibly do the same thing?

3) I am leaning towards using the Lehle to blend my Realist and Biesele (likely sending the blend to my Avalon U5), especially if the Lehle and Biesele Pre-amp/Mixer do the same thing.

Any input or opinions would be appreciated.

Hey there.. it's actually Clark Biesele of Biesele Amplification Systems. Handmade in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia.

I can't speak for the Lehle as I've never used it.

I use the Realist and the Biesele DP unit with the Biesele preamp ... I've been super happy with the sound both for large stages ( no feedback ) and smaller stages too. It adds a really nice core to your sound. The blending options of the preamp are quite nice too... you can choose as much or as little of either pickup .. or blend it with a close-mic.

I have a Lehle Parallel L pedal that I have used in that situation and it will work very well for what you want it to do. It's very well made and quiet.

Also with the footswitch you can drop one of the signals in and out as you like. On my bass I would mute the magnetic p/u signal when I would play with the bow and drop it back in during the pizz sections.
