LEJ Club???

Some people think having more knobs means more control and thats just wrong. They are different animals. Many get frustrated with a mid control because they can't figure out where to keep it all the time and some pre's just have an ugly freq point so they leave it centered all the time.

A 2 band has a center point on the Bass and Treb, as you boost or cut the Bass and Treb the Mid actually moves with it.

On a 3 band, that Mid freq is centered with the pot so as you cut and boost the bass and treb the mid does not float and the mid functions by moving the Pot.

A preamp with a Mid control will not sound like a 2 band, once you add that pot it changes the whole make up of the eq. of the Bass, Mid and Treb. I figured out a way to wire up a switch so that I can offer both, the True 2 band eq as well as the 3 band sound.

Wow that's super interesting. Thanks for the info Brian!

Francisco 's bass has the normal LEJ dual coil slim and 2 band setup.

The Old LEJ's with 70's position some came out super early with Benavente 3 band prior to my mods I made creating the LEJ 2 band which now I also offer the 2/3 band eq switch still different from the higher mid position Benavente 3 band pre and also lower output.
That Silver sparkle bass is great, the 2/3 band pre is very usable.

Thanks for that explanation. I was told by an un-named source that I should use the 2 band setting for slap, and the 3 band for finger style, because the 2 band does not cut the mix as well playing finger style. If I understand you correctly, that is not necessarily true. If I cut the bass and treble using the 2 band, the mids may become more prominent. I was also told that you suggest to LEJ owners that we should boost the bass and treble all the way with both pick ups turned all the way up. With that setting, there is a mid-scoop while in 2 band, so you get a lot of highs and lows, but not much in the mids. Am I right? Finally, I have one of the newer LEJ's. I see that the mids can be adjusted. It has not been changed since purchased from you. What is the default mid setting, and what frequencies can it be adjusted to? Why did you choose the default setting?

You can use the eq switch that way, especially if you want to set the bass up for slap to finger tone with the flip of a switch.

You are correct in cutting or not boosting the bass and treble to add for mid. To say the 2 band doesn't cut if false, 99% of LEJ's on the market are 2 band and I think many will tell you just the opposite that use them Live and in the Studio. Other factors come into play like the rig as well and what it is doing to the signal. But for the sake of making it easy you can get or add the 3 band switch option.

When I tell guys not to be a afraid or to boost the bass and treble to 11, that is to achieve the desire slap, ala Gospel tone or for those that want the highly desirable pre-gibson slap tone that no bass has ever offered since the pre-gibson tobias tone until the LEJ! I'm a Huge pre-gibson Tobias fan!

What are "Old" LEJs with the 70s placing? Mine was made in '01 and has a two band.

I'm not really sure what year mine is but I'm pretty sure it has the 70's spacing (but has been upgraded with the 2 bad pre). You can't really see here but the logo on the head stock of the older ones is different... LO and END are more block letter than script. Here is a picture of mine:

We'll go with pics; apologies for the craptacular photo skills:

5/21 LEJ with ash body, dark quilted maple top with trans blond finish, three piece maple neck with birds eye maple fretboard, pearl blocks and binding, LEJ DC JJ pups, 62 preamp layout with 2 x stacked vol/tune controls, bass, treble, passive/active switch and series/parallel switch. And a whole lot of mojo. Though I didn't have to pay any extra for the mojo; Brian happily built it into the bass for free :D
