I recommend both albums from the Barefoot Servants, one of the few bands in which he was a true member, not a session player.

They reprised it on Letterman last week. Unfortunately Sklar gets no screen time until the last two seconds of end credits. Will Lee steps back on percussion.
Come on, we never picked this instrument for "screen time".
We picked it by the love of it and the love of music.
If you want screen time, play guitar, drums or sing.

I normally have students listen to Suzy Bogguss Aces
Biggest reason is to shake them of the necessity of flash and understand a non geeddy/flea/claypool role .. I'll have them play Lee's timing with a shaker... freaks them out how tough a an "easy" tune is
Helps them understand deliberate and tasteful note placement (ahnd how tough it is to play slow and in time)... it's a great intorduction into what perfect pitch is (Suzy has it)
You sound like a very good teacher, my friend. I hope you're very busy.

That's why I admire guys like Lee Sklar, who always knows how to support the musical context at hand with rock-solid grooves and tastefully melodic lines without the need to draw attention to himself.
We can cheat -- it's much more fun discussing how to with cool guys like NBoyer and Geoff (both TBers doing fantastic).
Timmy
Exactly. Although I don't mind Flea, I think he is fantastic and I don't want to join the "Flea is overrated" bandwagon. It's great to see a bass guy come up to the front, but you only need one RHCP.
I understand.. can't tell you how many new learners get side tracked and tripped up by these guys...
The Mark King materials are simply the best at defining the role.
