Nope... wasn't me man. I haven't been into Mike's shop for a while now (I really need to stop by and bug him and Roger more often). I actually do have a reason to talk to him sometime soon, I'm going to have him make me another bass. I think it's high time I had a P-bass copy... and Mike's just the guy to do it for me. Either that or convince Mike that he REALLY wants to sell me his early 60's P-bass.. :D

I don't mean to pick on you personally, beermonkey, but your post was the most concise of those who dislike Lemmy's skillz. :)

There are general guidelines as to what a bass player should do, and then there are bassists such as Lemmy and Les Claypool who break those rules with great success. I will point out that Jamerson and Jaco also broke The Rules. I won't lump all those bassists in the same sentence because I'd certainly get flamed by worshippers of the latter two, but IMO one thing all four have in common is playing outside the box.

Actually, semantics are irrelevent IMO. I won't quibble with those who insist he's a horrible bassist (if you wanna call it rhythm guitar, that's fine; the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion is one of my favorite groove bands and they don't have a bassist). I will instead argue that Lemmy's simply a great musician: whatever it is he does on his Rickenbacker (and voice), he makes Motorhead the truly great punk/metal band that they are. If you don't like Motorhead, then chances are you don't like any music of their genre.

I think they're probably both funny, sarcastic guys who like to confound their audience's expectations ......the "anecdote" was great and shows this up superbly :

"Lemmy, you know, I think you're underrated as a bass player" and he pauses for about 9 seconds and says "I'm not sure that's possible, actually."

And of course, Les is equally humble: witness his band's self-promotional slogan "Primus Sucks". However despite their humility (refreshing and admirable though it is), I think they're both talented musicians who have brought clever new ideas to rock music.
