Pledge contains silicone. If that penetrates into an open seam, glue will not bond properly to the wood fibers. Do not use Pledge or guitar polish!
A damp soft cloth is perfect.
For deeper cleaning, Kolsteins cleaner is fantastic stuff, removes dirt and old rosin. It contains linseed and eucalyptus oils (you know that smell) and it is safe to use on the fingerboard too.
Another tip. bridge adjusters hard to turn? Use a a bar of soap to lubricate the threads.... do not use any type of oil or silicone (per Gary at Upton)
EW I opened the kolsteins stuff in my school and they got all mad at me because that stuff stinks, but sure does clean my kay right up. DO IT OUTSIDE!!! for Safety reasons.
I've got something on the sides of my bass that I want to clean off. Not sure what it is, since it's presumably always been there as I've never really touched the lower bouts. It seems like residue from a sticker, but dry - What could I use to get that stuff off? I don't think that's what it actually is, 'cause I can't think of a reason there would ever have been a sticker on it.
My bass has tons of battle scars so I'm obviously not too concerned about appearance, the stuff just feels weird to touch. Like a dried film almost. Weird.
Would water from a slightly damp cloth hurt my bass at all? I tried water in a small spot and it took that stuff right off...want to know if using it on the rest of the bass will damage it.
Lemon Pledge is for dusting furniture. It is not lemon oil. You can buy lemon oil, which is literally the oil of lemons, in some grocery stores, in the section where they sell olive oil, sesame seed oil, and so on.
A former bass teacher recommended Weiman Lemon Oil. It is wonderful, made my bass look really nice. A bottle will last forever. Even has suncreen in it, for what that is worth. It is also silicone free.
