The Fender American Deluxe bridge is a direct drop-in fit, and allows you to string through the body. I bought mine from an online parts vendor.

I also have a Fender tweed case for mine. One mod I didn't mention is that I replaced the chrome pickguard screws with black ones.

Nice case...probably gonna have to get one of those now, too;). Thanks for the info on the bridge. I think I may try those bakelite replacement saddles I've seen talked about elsewhere in the forum first, before I go ahead and replace the whole thing. Looks exactly like mine....

I know I'd really have to keep my eye out for one, but it'd be worth the rate. You paid a reasonable price for a magnificent representation of some of Leo's finest work. I'm constantly on the look for the next good deal, just living in a small-ish town sucks for anything half-decent.

I've always been intrigued by the higher quality Japanese stuff, not just Fenders. I remember a really old friend from when I was a kid who played guitar, had this MIJ Series-A electric guitar. It was heavy, and sustained for days. I've never seen another one in my life like it. I find Japanese instruments have their own characteristic feel, as if you just know it's from Japan when you pick it up.

Yours looks like it has that same feeling.

I also have a brown/gold plush case -- the plush interior is the same color as the "butterscotch" finish on the bass. I'll have to take a photo.

I really like the '51. My combo played at a local venue which uses a friend who manages and engineers at the local pro studio. We played there in late May. Yesterday, out of the blue, the sound guy called me to tell me how much he loved my bass sound -- this coming from a guy who plays killer bass himself (we did a musical together a few years ago at the local state U -- I was on harmonica -- and he was brought in on the last dress rehearsal when the original bass player proved to not being able to cut the complex score. My friend came in and sight-read three hours of music and missed one note!). Oh, and another thing he said that I love to hear: "You need to turn your bass UP more." :D

I recall a thread where you mentioned replacing the pickup with a Lindy Fralin. I'm not happy with the evenness of volume or tone with the stock pickup on mine, so I'm considering a replacement, but I want to get one that fits so there are no body mods. I'd appreciate any info as I respect your opinions highly.

I'll just chime in that while my CS '55 pickup is stock I've heard the Fralin is very good.

Thanks for "chiming". While we're on the subject, do you or anyone else know if the (stock) pickup pole pieces are adjustable? Is it possible that this pickup is fine and just needs tweaking?
I've never gotten into the guts of the electronics, so I'm reluctant to try anything which may cause permanent disrepair. Also, it seems there are several different Fralins of varied cost. I think
I'd like to stay with a single coil pickup for now...
