I was in an original funk-rock-reggae group in Denver called Fina Dupa. Just stumbled on this very good live set we recorded at Redfish in Boulder in October of 2006.

It was pretty early in the run with this group, many of these songs went on the first album "Give It Back" and a few got some airplay on local Colorado radio. The group eventually opened for Trombone Shorty at the Boulder Theater.

This is more or less a board recording with little if any post-production. Given that, it reflects well upon where the band was and was going at that point. I look back fondly on our ability to use space where we needed space, to use a zillion notes where that made sense, and to use chord changes everyone in the world didn't automatically expect.

For the interested, I think I was playing a Yamaha TRB5; I can hear an octaver and a Bassballs here and there in this, and at this point I was probably running a direct line to the FOH out of an Ashdown Mark King amp.

Highlights:

  • "Jaco" is "HAH-co", not "JAH-co"; it's about a surf break in Costa Rica and not about a bass player.
  • "One in Seven" is a cover of a Soulive tune that gets in pretty deep.
  • "It Is What It Is" is a nice R&B radio tune that became a fan favorite later.
  • "Fly Like an Eagle" is a jam-ish cover of the Steve Miller tune that featured our excellent sax player.

Liked Soulglo. Was into jam bands a bit back in high school ('99-'01), saw Phish a couple of time and some others at Sandstone in KC. Liked the slap bass solo, is Bassballs an envelope filter? It's electro-harmonix right?

It's an envelope filter with a certain personality. IIRC, it has two filters sweeping in the opposite direction, which gives it a vocal quality. Simple controls though, I think there's only one knob. Cool pedal - yes, EHX.
