I forget which thread I suggested it earlier, but, if you want to eat up that extra space, you might be able to screw down an empty cover down into it while hardly adding any weight.

Anyone else in this thread ever wonder, as I did, what would their Squier Mustang bass look like without the chrome control plate? I just never really liked the look or all the fingerprints on it.
I once again worked a fine WI cheese/labor trade with my TB buddy @covermego. I purchased a solid white blank pickguard and he crafted a nice guard to accommodate a new rail pickup and a replacement for that chrome plate. I sent him the original guard with a rough diagram of where the pickup would need to be and the chrome plate. Due to the gap in the original meetup of those two parts we discussed and opted to keep them as separate parts. With only a small amount of filing/sanding to get them to lineup I'm very happy with the results. The paint work was done by our daughter who also had originally given me a blue bass clef sticker for the guard. I just got a cricut machine of my own now since she's a new mom and her time is limited. She approved my version in red, also happy with that.
Good to have this one playable again. This one also got a new Squier Mustang neck to replace the original Bronco I had put on when I built it. Photos of the before and after. Thanks Lenny!

Fernandes Revolver already modded with Geezers and lighter hardware and an Audere Pro Z and a battery light … but I swapped the Geeers for old Lace Transensors.

I just modded a Glarry short scale, Fender Bronco knockoff for a good friend of mine. Two MM pickups with series/parallel switches, Artec big pole P bass pickup between them (a great pickup btw), 6 way Freeway switch, Artec 3 band preamp with sweepable mids run on 18volts and a new pickguard I cut for this bass. Plays and sounds great. If I still played 4 strings, it could be my main bass.

My latest little project, Hartwood Satellite. Loving the retro look of these guitars but I wanted even a bit more...retro.
swapped out the stock split P's for an Artec lipstick, got a new PG made up, swapped cloverleaf stock tuners for Y shaped Wilkinsons, added a 5 cap varitone pot and some chickenheads, and new Guyker bridge which looked a bit more..retro.
Oh and nitro'd the front face of the headstock and made a new decal in a more retro font. It still says Hartwood as I'm not gonna steal their thunder.

I love the chicken head knobs, but why are there three? Volume, regular tone and varitone?

Yep, that. I believe you can have the varitone with or without a standard tone control, I don't know how but desoldering the cap off the existing tone pot then soldering the 2 leads of the Varitone 1) to the lug of where the cap was and 2) to the pot case you get a tone difference on each of the 5 cap settings except on the 6th setting which is just bypass.Great look.
My basses started out as a Chinese 21" bass uke knockoff of a Hofner for about $200. It came with a floating bridge and wonky piezo pickup saddle. I had Eric's Guitar Shop in the Sound City complex (yes, that Sound City), in Van Nuys, CA, replace the bridge with a fully adjustable metal high mass bridge, add a mini humbucker neck pickup, with flatwound nylon core strings that surprisingly work with the humbucker, Hofner style tailpiece, HipShot light tuners, and new pickguards, I replaced knobs with color matching, plus on some, stick-on fret markers, all which cost about $350. Then had Pat Wilkins paint or add a veneer to them, which was about $400.
My two Squier Sonic Pbass guitars. The yellow bass I installed a ToneRider Classic Pickup. The green bass has a Duke pickup. I also polished and dressed the frets.

Gibson. TV Jones pickup in the neck, reversed the bridge pup, VBT circuit, Hipshot bridge and ultralight tuners. Weight: 6 lbs 10.8 oz.
