Be warned, upright pianos can be outright liars, charlatans, hypocrites, and notoriously bad actors. If you look into these uprights, like me, whenever you get a chance, you'll find them, often enough, anything but upright. Don't be fooled.
They'll regularly be playing suspect, rude songs and disdainful, sinful music, or they'll be innocuously concealing contraband, menaces to society, like moonshine, rotgut, black market tobacco and other seedy, crooked content, all under their seemingly presentable lids. In short, uprights are dishonest pianos, just like the rest of them.

That's not misinformation! My dad hid the distilling equipment in the piano!

If you don't know, you'll find the answer somewhere in this thread, quite possibly swept under a rug in some dark, dank corner, underneath a rabid, three-headed rottie named Fluffy.

Fact! Early pianos were called square pianos. (they were anything but - truth)
They competed with round pianos, sold for home use. Hence references to families singing round the piano.
