Lets straighten this out once and for all!

I am certain that the proper way to say this is:

  • Original band and cover band.

    Votes: 55 65.5%

  • Originals band and covers band.

    Votes: 29 34.5%

That's what I was thinking.

At what point does a band go from being called a original(s) band to just a band?

How many records do they have to sell?
How many followers do they have to have?
How big of a place do they have to play in?
How much radio air time do they have to get?


There are a lot of mid level recording and touring bands that have a small to medium following that I would not put original(s) in front of their name.

How many followers do they have to have? 10,000 loyal followers, and at least one youtube video with 500,000 hits.

How big of a place do they have to play in? They need to be able to consistently sell out 500 person capacity vanues.


Or, people have to start covering their music. :)

I don't even think that it would be dependent on their size/following/success. Maybe it's just me, but I assume that a band that someone mentions to me is a band that plays originals, unless they say it's a cover band. I'd more likely describe an "original(s)" band by their genre, maybe adding the word local, i.e. local punk band, local metal band, etc.

I am not new here. I have been a TB member for several years but wanted to change my user name so I re-registered. I have been playing and gigging since 1978.

Didn't mean that as an insult. Checked and saw you had 150something posts. Thought that might have been why you never saw anyone say originals or covers band. :) My first gig was in 1978.

Context or not, it's not the typical or accepted vernacular. If someone asked me if I wanted to play in their 'originals' band I would politely decline as this would be an immediate indicator of the experience levels involved.
