Let's talk about 6SL7 tubes!

Some interesting thoughts.

I've got several old 6SL7's and 6SN7's and 5892's. Over the winter I may play with some of them...I have a harebrained idea to use a "Martian" 815 tube for the PP power amp section and drive it with a 6SL7 preamp. Using LED's for cathode bias on the preamp tubes. Kind of a George Jetson meets Fred Flintstone.

Where do we send flowers?

Actually the 815 is kinda interesting, though its rated for RF, the RCA sheet shows it used for AF with 500 volts on the plate, yielding 54 watts in P-P.

Did I mention this is a TWIN beam power tube, two sections in one glass envelope? So one tube does the entire P-P section. And the plates connect on top, one connection on each side, hence the "Martian" nickname (that's what it's called, honest!)

Now back to 6SL7's. ;)

I've had a chance to think about this a little (not my harebrained idea but the thread's original theme: 6SL7 etc).

It seems there's a lot of "boutique" amp manufacturers today. Look closely at their offerings, however, and most of them are merely Fender/Marshall/Vox clones. They might change a few components to some high dollar part (like an expensive transformer) in an attempt to capture some "magic mojo", or perhaps add some mod that has been rumored to yield that extra bit of "magic mojo". However, still they have basically just copied an old design.

Now, I don't claim to be an amp design expert, I'm still learning. There are a few good books out there expressly for guitar/bass builders: Merlin Blencowe's "Designing Tube Preamps for Guitar and Bass" is sitting here by me at the moment. (I've also got KOC's TUT volume 1, but cannot afford the whole series.) One thing is alluded to in both of those: the early circuits are good as a starting point, but there are some quirks to the early circuits, especially for guitar/bass use, that can easily be addressed by someone that applies good circuit design practice. Controlling blocking distortion, appropriate grid-stopper resistors, what frequency response to really use, those details can make the difference betwen a great-sounding amp and an amp that makes folks say..."oh, I remember now why those old Silvertones were such crappy amps." Yep, the original design was copied warts and all.

Again, I'm not claiming to know how to do any of those great design practices. Blencowe points out what to do with the ubiquitous 12AX7 as a preamp tube. But what should be done with a 6SL7? Evidently it had some features that weren't desirable, otherwise the 12AX7 would not have surpassed it so easily. Prone to microphonics, I've read...maybe that's why Ampeg started shock-mounting their chassis? I dunno.

We should get Jule over here! :) He's made it work for him. Of course, Ampeg had some luck with it in their use as well.

I'm not so sure that the 12AX7 based designs are more successful because it's a better tube, but maybe its because of the familiarity and popularity of the designs that used it, and/or because of the easy availability of the tube and relatively low cost. It also could be due to the size...the 12AX7 is small enough to fit in a lot of tight amps.

e. But what should be done with a 6SL7? Evidently it had some features that weren't desirable, otherwise the 12AX7 would not have surpassed it so easily.

It's too big to fit in confined spaces, especially in multiples. Nonal tubes were mainly designed to allow a smaller form factor compared to octals, AFAIK. Probably cheaper to make as well.

You might take a look at my thread on my DIY 6SL7/6SN7 bass preamp. I used Spice modeling and found many things to try that aren't all that Ampeg-ish. I need to try some of the other 50+ designs I worked up to say how successful I was though...;)

I just bought these to try out in my Monique - I'll let you fellas know how they sound when they get here

Who'ja get them from and what did you have to spend? I'm still considering springing for at least one of the red base RCA JAN CRC-5691 for the front end to try it. I'd also like to find a couple of the older Tung-Sol tubes as well...Not that there's anything wrong with modern tubes. I just can't leave well enough alone. I'm interested in what you find once you try them.

I got the matched pair off the bay for $50. I've also swapped (in the Monique) the AU7 with a old RCA and the EZ81 w/ an old Mullard. Both to my liking. When I get the RCA 6SL7's in I will get a recording up of the stock vs oldy but goodies!

See! I warned you this was going to happen.
I blame yall!
I'm off tube rolling. I know where there is at least one more RCA black plate.
The rest I'm gonna try. I may swap out the rectifier tube for the EH I have but will try something old school if it's at my friend's shop.
This is all yalls fault. Admit it and be done with it. Gott Dang eet.
After my Monique rack warmed up it sounded just lubricious.
That's not a word.
Yet.
