My friend told me once that you are "practicing" even when you are not practicing. Listening intently is a good way to at least be "exposed". I also find that actually playing music with others can be the best practice. I think that these sorts of things go come in waves. I was gigging with a bar band (in addition to other musical endeavors and gigs) often for about a 2 years. I also played with other artists and played at church. I wasn't able to do the exercises in my Ray Brown book, but I really grew. It all helps; just do it. I am married with a child and I teach high school English.
