I was in GC and picked up a cheapish Jazz Bass made from "light maple". The thing had an amazing resonance, but I'm wondering if the reason it was so present and loud was because it was so bright.

I wouldnt expect a cheap guitar to have such a pronounced sound.

The bass had a really ugly black binding on the neck. I didnt get a chance to plug in. Does that resonance translate to great plugged tone?

Sounds like you picked up a 70's squire
(Natural, black block and binding)

If its that then its not light maple but 'soft maple' which sounds a lot like northern hard ash (which is basically swamp ash but heavier).

Those are great basses period no matter who made them and what the price tag is. IMHO.
