I can say with a high degree of certainty based on personal experience that 2020 + 2020S = Mmmmmmmmm.
He clearanced out the 2020's, though. I wonder if there will be more. Because I kind of want to throw a couple of more in the mix just to see if it makes my signal even more awesome.

How/where are you using all of yours in your signal chain?

Back-to-back. Literally. Well, bottom to top. I have the 2020S velcro'd to the top of the 2020 because I have such limited space on my board, and I wanted them in the same place anyway. Both together is definitely better than either alone. So it goes:

Bass > Solarian Boost > Drives/mods (through a loop switcher) > Compressor > 2020 > 2020S > Broughton Fliptop/SVPre preamps > Sometimes a Broughton SSDI > Broughton RFE > DI

Got two 2020ses a couple days ago from the most recent batch. I previously tried one 2020, which I had trouble telling whether it was in my chain or not. When I did hear a difference, I could replicate the slight treble roll off with an eq pedal I already had, so away it went.

Two 2020ses though, exactly what I was looking for. Does something in the lower mids that helps it sit in the mix. Whatever is happening in the high end isn't just a roll off either. It's like a roll off but also a polishing in a way. Playing clean, it's like there's a sparkle that's added while also making the signal warmer.

Running a very high gain, djenty signal loaded with upper mids through a Greenboy 12/6/1 there were significantly less high frequencies that caused ear fatigue, but it was just as clear.

I tried a number of placements, scattered throughout the chain, back to back, separated, etc. I liked it best with both last in chain. If LBA ever offers a 2-in-1 enclosure I hope to personally pick it up.

I'll end this just by saying - they make it a joy to play. I got lost in some fiddling about yesterday for a few hours. Not many pedals do that.

Hi all, this may have already been answered, but this thread is pretty long and I couldn't quite find the answer I was looking for.

Basically, I'm trying to figure what exactly the 2020/2020s does to the instrument's signal. I read an article a while back about using a transformer and some RC filters to mimic the circuit load of a passive instrument, such that you can "fool" an effect into thinking it's first in line after a passive bass/guitar even when it's not. Useful for gain stages that expect a Hi-Z input, etc.

Is this what the 2020(s) accomplishes (if so, I'm interested!), or am I way off? Thanks!

No. It’s not designed to do that. I think I covered all it does in my videos and info on my website. If I’m missing something let me know.

Thanks for the reply! That it is not intended as a pickup sim answers my main question, really. I had checked out your website and demo video, and I still wasn't totally clear on its utility. I don't think anything was missing, rather I'm probably not the target audience for the product i.e., I'm not sure I could tell whether or not I'm missing out on "studio mojo." (My dad was an audio engineer, I am not, so my understanding of these things is only partial!)

To me, the effect is like a subtle, eq-less preamp - it adds a certain character.

To borrow a technical term, it makes things sound more gooder. Especially if you strap two of them together.

OK, been using both 2020s in various configurations and I like every scenario better with the 2020s in the chain. As others have said, makes things "more gooder". :D

Does good things to the mids and I like the description someone posted saying it made your tone more "studio like". Does something nice to the highs too.

I notice the effect most with two 2020s back-to-back and after something that can drive them good. After a compressor with output pushed is really good.

I think I'm going to try and mount these under my pedal board after compressor and before preamp.

I definitely like the 2020s more than the 2020. Good move on the part of Mike at Lightningboy to release this updated version. I will also say some if this is more of a feel thing... in other words it feels better to play with these two 2020s in the chain. Just something about it.

I've tried one immediately after bass, two immediately after bass.... one before a compressor and after a compressor.... both before and after a compressor.... different combos before and after boost pedals and fuzz... after a preamp.....

I really like immediately following my Empress Bass compressor, Doc Lloyd Photon Compressor and Becos devices. Does something nice will all of those. After a tube compressor I don't notice as much. Definitely something nice happening though.
