Lightning Boy Audio Thread

It's going to be a fun day deciding where to place these in the chain. Last night I briefly demo'd the 2020S at the beginning of the whole chain: bass -> 2020S -> tuner and really liked it there. Any other placement suggestions?

I would probably start off by trying one 23fe+ after the para-eq, the other after the comp, and the 2020s after the low rider.
You’ve got a lot of options to experiment with with that set up!

Could they improve on that already impressive board?

They're nice for absorbing gain, so maybe after the drive?

To my ear the various LBA transformers add a nice touch of spice or flavor like adding the right pinch to a dish, you might not taste it but you miss it when not there.
So far I have one of each the different offerings and constantly have them in play.

Depends what you are going for but if you want max color out of them stack all three after the compressor with the compressor output goosed up to offset signal loss from stacking the three.

This exactly is what I do. I have 6 LBA 2020Ss and a single LBA 23Fe stacked up basically at the end of my chain after my Cali76 CB before going into the Ripply Fall and then the Noble DI. I've got the output on the Cali boosted enough to nicely saturate all 7 transformers and the Ripply Fall loves that.

I've got to ask: how did you get to six 2020Ss as the sweet spot? Did you have a sense you'd want that many, or did was it more that each one got you closer to what you wanted and you had faith you'd eventually get there?

I’m really interested, as this is the most extreme number I’ve seen, does it really make that much difference from having maybe a couple, to a monstrous six and an FE as well?
How would you describe the effect they have, compared to not having them at all?
Oh and surely it makes your board super-heavy as well?

Nice set-up.. thanks for sharing!

Not intentionally. I bought 2 originally. Then I wanted 2 more for another board. Then I added 1 to each board... and now they're all on this board. I guess now, it's like salt.. if adding a little tastes good, add a little more, if it tastes better, add more until it doesn't.

We're going to need more pictures if you decide you need more salt.

Anyone know how a 23fe+ would compare to a JPTR Jive with no switches turned on? I use a JIVE on my main board as an "always on" tone tool right after my compressor, but building a second board with a quad cortex and don't want to wait around months for a JIVE

I currently have one 23fe+ on the way, but now seeing people stacking them... I was also thinking of possibly using them to "sandwich" the quad cortex between it. (signal chain would be wireless -> cali v2 comp -> jive (or 23fe+) -> quad cortex -> 23fe+ -> Sushibox Finally v2

I have the 23Fe (no +), and I like what it does, but it’s waaaay more subtle than what you’d be able to get out of a Jive, or pretty much any active circuit. If you’re after a soupçon of mild saturation and compression without adjustability, maybe fine. Now, 23Fe(+) with said active circuit, and you’re adding the special sauce. All just my opinion, of course.

So, I’ve had an LBA DiVision (Nuvistor tube and in-house transformer-based DI) for a while and somehow never noticed that a some point an ‘EQ Mod’ upgrade was made available for it.
Via the website, it looked like I’d missed the boat, but dropped Mike an e-mail. He was nice enough to still offer it, (i think he said he only had a couple of kits left) so it’s recently had a refresh!

There is a new HI/LO EQ switch to tailor the area the ‘Vision’ (or presence) control affects, a ‘Dark’ filter for high-end and an added post-tube output, so it can now be used as a sound source in a chain of pedals.. rather than simply a straight DI, with a thru.
There is also a ‘fix’ for some units that were ‘microphonic’.. which I’d noticed on this one a bit when you plugged the jack into the input. Quiet as a mouse now..

I can post more about the sound of the unit, once I’ve had a chunk more time playing through it.

I need to say that Mike’s care and attention throughout has been exceptional, especially through the holiday period.. seems utterly top notch to me.

No audio samples yet, gotta find (make?) the time, but I did get to test it at a rehearsal this week.

It is significantly more 'colorful' than the 2020s, and there's definitely some compression happening. The SBM lets me push it quite a bit harder for more saturation. Neve>Iron>Tubes = Mmmm-mmm good.
Have you ever tried the Brighton BBA instead of the SMB? Really torn between the two. I run into a StrobostompHS>DBX boost>Cali 76 CB >Broughton HPF/LPF>JDI. I’m looking to run the signal a little hotter so I’m considering the SMB and BBA. I’ve got a 23FE coming and also *seriously* considering a Nobelium…

Have both. The BBA is very neutral and reduces noise while the SBM slightly thickens tone and maybe tweaks the low mids.

worth running together?
Hi! I don't mind at all, just pointing out... you might be able to get better info over in the Broughton thread and keep this to LBA talk. :)

That said, I have both and run both. They are VERY different things. BBA, consider that just a buffer/booster. If it does affect your tone, it is very minimal. It does some other things too but nothing you are really going to notice. It is not designed to affect your tone. SBM absolutely affects your tone. Thickens, agree there is a low-mid bump, and the higher you turn the knob you can get a little grit. It is very noticable. I run the BBA first before anything. I run the SBM last and dial in to taste depending on what else is happening in the signal chain. I know some folks like having the SBM upfront too, as a dirty boost. I have not tried that but I can see that being a good thing.

If you want something that will noticably affect your tone, SBM. If you need a clean buffer/booster, BBA.

Always wanted to try one of these. Have a TI box and really like it. But it's a passive DI, it does what it does. These look so cool :)
