a few years ago, before i played bass I was at a battle of the bands at the middle east in boston, and there was a metal band that whenever their bassist strummed the lights flashed, I think that would be a huge crowd pleaser, does anyone know how i could do that?

lights with bass?

Car audio has been doing this for years. You can get something, not sure what it's called, but everytime a certain frequency hits it it sends a signal to the lights. Sorta like an on off switch.
They probably had a lighting controller that was audio sensitive. American DJ makes a bunch of stuff like that.
Buy a 15,000 Watt power amp to use, and the entire city block's lights will flash with the bass. Or dim, actually, but if you play stacatto, they'll blink!

Here's an easy way to get it done. Some LED fixtures (Chauvet LEDsplash 152b for example) have a mic built in that will trigger a built in chase sequence. Put the fixture close enough to the sound source and it will do all of the work for you. You can daisy chain many of these fixtures together and set them to slave. All of the fixtures will now follow the same chase sequence.
I find the Chauvet 4Bar especially nice for this purpose.
