Line 6 HX Effects

I will be selling mine. It has a bug where the effects in a preset dissapear during a set. The name of the effect is there, I press it and then it says none or something like that, and the effect is gone. Not suitable for live use.
I tried to update the firmware but it didn't work
Admittedly I don't have much time nowadays to make it work but thats the exact reason it is no longer good for me
As I think this through, it seems like if you sell it with the bug intact, you would have to disclose that to the buyer, diminishing the saleability and financial return. If you get it properly updated, fixed that is, then why not keep it?

It’s hard to fully understand the HX FX without getting down and dirty with it. It’s quite special. I know plenty of folks have tried it and found that it didn’t suit them, but don’t deny yourself the chance at love.

Ah that sucks man. I know that happened to me a few times. It hasn't happened in a while. I think I did a factory reset on it and then updated it. I also deleted any corrupt patches before all that. It was a slight bummer, but I worked it out and it's been problem free since. Sorry it didn't work out for you and you don't have the time to mess with it. It's a great unit. But I see how some things can be dealbreakers for some. I know someone who got an HX stomp and as soon as he opened the box and saw the power supply, he didn't even plug it in. He packed it back up and returned it. Some things just can't be compromised.
Yeah. I really wanted to like it. I does so many things!
Back to my faithful Me 50b

The [none] bug never happened again till 2.71 firmware... But when I gigged with my HxFx and my double bass weird things use to happen... Like a switch that doesn't work or a buzz in an amp. Things that never happen at home or in electric
My first none bug came after editing with a computer. I begun editing using the pedal exclusively and it seemed to stop until it came again without changing anything, in a different preset and it ocurred intermitently. I could fix it momentarily by chosing another present and coming back to the first but that is clearly not ideal

Sounds to me like corrupt patches. How that happens? I have no idea. But I deleted all my corrupt patches, performed a backup, did factory reset, then updated and I haven't had the issue since. I know it's a little tedious but really, it's not that bad. And only takes about 20 min depending. I would give that a shot before you give up on it. But hey, I can get why you'd be over it. For some this it just too much to do. No offense there at all. Some people have certain expectations in their gear and it's understandable.

All I know is, after hearing the HX for so long then plugging in my Zoom ms60b, it was like night and day in sound quality. The HX killed it. That and the fact I have all those routing, blending abilities and functionality ruled out any tech issues I had by a long shot let alone all the actual effects that you are offered in a neat and very functional package.

Thanks I’ll try that. I dont loose much and maybe it solves the issue
I’ll post the results

Def try running the dist in a parallel path. That works every time for me. And it sounds great! And yes, you can assign all them to the same foot switch. I think you can put every block on 1 fs....I think....??... or at least 7 of the 9. I can't remember.

I've started getting a handle on the signal flow. Like many things, once you know how to do it, it's not so hard! ;) I managed to set up a dUg-style distortion using a parallel path with a highpass filter set at 1kHz for the distortion side, then blending the clean/distorted sides to taste. The Colordrive seemed to work pretty well for the distortion side, but I'm certainly interested in hearing what other people are using. I've got the Obsidian for a more basic overdrive, and the 70's Chorus and Bass Octaver are coming in handy, too. Still got two empty foot switches after moving the noise gate and compressor "upstream" to the always-on spots....

I'm curious to know how important having an expression pedal is for the HX. Is it absolutely essential, or does it facilitate live playing in some way? I guess what I'm asking is "If I bought an HX, would having an expression pedal make a difference in how much I like it?"

Yeah, I realize this is rather vague. I'd appreciate the insight.
So the HX Effects is ridiculously flexible. I have two expression pedals - one is just a big knob in a box, the other is just a switch (with an LED). You can assign the switches to control parameters, toggle between parameters, engage or disengage effect blocks.

That said, for most of what I do - electric guitar where the HX is my whole pedalboard, acoustic guitar where the HX is my whole pedalboard, and bass where the HX is... you guessed it, my whole pedalboard - I don't usually bother with expression pedals.

On my full electric guitar pedalboard, on the other hand, I use the expression pedals constantly to blend in and out phaser feedback in real time, to switch between 100% wet and 50/50 settings on Particle Verb pads, and to instantly change settings on my delay to get slapback when I need it.

In other words, when I'm keeping it simple, I live without them, but I do love them when my rig is much more complicated. I do actually have a wah-type expression pedal as well, but I rarely use it. If I ever run a small board and want a wah, I'll just use a real wah because I like the toe switch, which the HX doesn't support (yet - I'm working on a workaround). I don't use a volume pedal either. IMHO, it's not the strength of the HX Effects.

So are any of you guys using the HX as a preamp/DI solution? I'm considering picking up an Ampeg IR for the cab, but I'm just not sure about how to mock up a preamp. I've always been a clean DI bassist, but I certainly appreciate that the tone is a little lackluster that way.

It doesn’t have a an XLR in it. But it does have a few models you can use as preamps. It has the darkglass B7K ultra in it, that’s a bass pre. It’s supposedly getting the Sansamp BDDI in the next update. With those 2 alone you’d be pretty set with preamps. But there are a few other diet models you could use as a preamp as well as some comps that could fill those shoes. So short of the XLR, I think you’d be set.

Yeah, I've got a flat passive DI that I usually use. Easy enough. Okay, cool. I'll have to play with this.

Speaking of the next update/2.80....where the hell is it?

First issue with the HX FX: any delay (legacy, mono, stereo) seems to have a much higher feedback setting than indicated. I play a note and it gets overwhelming in a fraction of a second and continues until I turn it off. It wasn't doing this a few days ago. No expression pedal is plugged in. I did a search and couldn't find anything.

Any thoughts before I do a reset?

Hmmmmm...that's gotta be some setting stuck on or something. Wish I could be more help. Seems like something is off. Or on rather. Where are you tap tempo settings?

Using the computer may be the reason. Save the preset also on the HX Effects itself before switching or any other uses of the device. This may help.

Re: Impulse Responses

Okay, so the discussion of the OmniCabSim has me thinking back to previous internet wanderings about how Impulse Responses are created. I still have much research to do in relation to the matter, but it seems that creating an Impulse Response starts with an audio recording of your setup. I.E. I could record my Shuttle/Bergantino amp setup and create an Impulse Response out of my specific personal rig, then load it into the HX.

But that leads me to wonder... If I had an OmniCabSim, couldn't I create an audio file from that? I mean, instead of recording a physical amp setup, use the OCS through a recording interface to record the audio file, and then process that as the source file instead. So in theory, you could record and create IRs from the OmniCabSim, or [insert your favorite preamp here @gregmon79 ha ha!] and load those into the HX...? Now THAT would be an interesting experiment. You could have an IR library of preamps. I could have my Tonehammer, my Vintage Ultra, etc etc etc...

(I've only scratched the surface of IRs so far, so my theory very well could be a little... incorrect. lol)

5sg.
It can be done and it works great. I know a few touring musicians that use Omnicabsim impulses loaded into their AxeFx. Don't know exactly how they achieved that, though.

Voxengo has a free IR creator software. You generate a sine sweep with it, play it through your gear, record the result and the software will create the IR from the two audio files.
I used this method successfully to create an IR from a TwoNotes Torpedo cab simulation and then load it onto HX Effects.

Thanks, I'll take a look at it tonight - with this particular delay patch it's never needed tap tempo, which means either that's not the answer or why I didn't think about it.
