It's a popular solution with EMG pickups. SInce they have a built-in preamp, you can use a basic passive setup after them.
Steinberger xl-2, ESP Tom Araya come to mind.

It can be dialed to sound like a more articulate and fatter Pbass...

I have been playing a Carvin Claro Walnut 5 string for 11 years. The bass has active electronics (which are indeed very good). But it also has one other great feature: If you pull the volume knob straight up the bass goes into 'passive' mode and also saves you if your battery in the bass goes dead during a gig. A great and very versatile bass!

Our Vintage Tone Control is passive.

Only our treble/bass boost preamp is active.
