When I started measuring my basses, I really wasn't thinking about manufacturer's "width of the neck at the nut" thing. My thoughts were that when you measure string spacing at the bridge you do it string center to center, so if you want to get a handle on how much the strings taper down to the nut, you'd want a measurement of string spacing there too so you can compare!

Of course, neck width is related but then you add in the extra blank area of the fingerboard beyond the highest and lowest string. That could be variable. I didn't want to "overmeasure" the thing, but I think I was trying to be logical if not paying attention to "standard" manufacturer specs.

Of course if one wants to be anal, best would be measurements on BOTH string spacing and neck width at the nut! :-)

Playing no, buying absolutely. I prefer smaller nut width and more neck depth for example. Just what I find comfy, definitely needs to be comfortable for me to spend money on it.

Ibanez GSR200fm: 1.5625" (1 9/16") 39.7mm

Spector Legend CLS: 1.5625" (1 9/16") 39.7mm

both are 4 string, and funny I didn't realize they had the same exact nut width. Just knew they were similar.

Just on a side note: For the next two weeks I will be taking my two monthly trip home, so as much as I love all you guys (and gals), I will be spending my time with wife, kids, and other homely pleasures ;) !!

However, please continue posting and as soon as I am back to the boring work world I will update the list.

Interesting.
I know J necks are smaller than the P necks and then everybody else falls in between or outside the box. Ibanez necks are slim & fast, 6-string necks run the gamut, the Yamaha TRB-6ers are like aircraft carriers, etc. I just hope we don't have to list which basses come with BA III bridges installed vs. Fender-types vs. Hipshot designs vs. string through body designs...

Over at the Rick Resource Forum we have a chart of neck girth at various points on Rickenbacker bass necks, collected from instruments the RRF members own; this gets updated with new entries, occasionally. :bassist:

Hi again!!

Sorry for the delay folks, but after my vacation I was sucked into a project which included minimum 16 hour days, so not much time to eat and sleep, never mind TB!!

I have updated the list (thanks solarmist).

@mongo2: By "original" Fender Jazz bass, what bass are you referring to exactly, the first one?? (I apologise for my ignorance!).
