Not every drummer needs a click to stay on time, and not every drummer will ever need to be able to play to a click. If a drummer does want to learn to play to a click, it can be done without backing tracks.
Quite often, less is more. Filling in space just for the sake of filling in space rarely adds to the song. Some of the best songs of all time use sparse instrumentation.
'Live' bands with backing tracks
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rush and the Who have been using tracks for since the 70s.
...IMO, glorified karaeoke, with some extra props. Either it's live, or it isn't. Backing tracks: isn't.
Amen. I think we can use the term "karaoke band" for bands that rely on backing tracks. You are either in a real live band or a karaoke band. There is no middle ground.

I agree with most of whats said here.
How do you feel about Loop stations?
I know of a solo act where he starts each song by playing 4 bars on guitar, loops that, and then plays lead and sings over the looped rhythm. He might have used some simple drum tracks too. Id say he this was OK being that he was a solo act and still played good leads and sang well.
You have fourteen people in the band that know how to play and yet you still need to use backing tracks for MOST of your songs?
Seriously?
There is always middle ground.
Either it's live or it isn't?
Except for when it is and it isn't.
Except for THEN.
I'm SO glad my favorite band, KISS, would never ever ever do this! ;-)
You're correct. There is middle ground.
In my post, I was trying to make a distinction between bands that USE backing tracks and bands that RELY on them. Bands that rely on them (use them almost every song for the entire song) are karaoke bands.
Queen used them very sparingly for a song or two. Rush uses them a bit much for my taste. They should become a four piece so they can pull their songs off live instead of using backing tracks. I like Rush, but I think it's lame they use backing tracks so much.
