Live teachers

Hey everyone,
I'm Chris, new to the forum. I was hoping someone could point me to actual instructors. I've gone through some old threads about different online courses BassBuzz and such. They seem all over the place to me. One vid talks about scales, next 5 things to not suck at. I think they would be fine for in-between classes but I could use more direction.

I'm 52, new to bass and have plenty of time on my hands for practice. My goal would be to meet new friends, jam and possibly small local gigs. Prefer not to make original music but do cover song of various genres and have fun.

I came across a Mr. Wellington, who sounds nice but a bit pricey for me. Would prefer an actual bass player than a music store employee as part of their job. Any suggestions?

Ask other musicians where they take lessons, look at the community boards at the local music stores. Ask the music department faculty at the local college. Good luck and have fun.

Local colleges/universities are often good places to look. You can often find grad students and even faculty looking for some side money.

Where do you live? Big city? Small town? Are there colleges/universities with music programs in your area? Are there any open jams in your area?

There are a couple colleges in my area but nowadays you need a student id to get into most buildings..

Anyone here looking to make a few bucks?

I am in a very similar boat to you, 53 and converting from (self-taught) drums to bass. I did the online lessons/self-taught thing over the summer and agree, they can be all over the place. I really liked SteveKonBass and if I get to the point where I am looking for a Zoom teacher, he is who I will prob contact. I went through all of his video bass lessons in order. Check out a few of his lessons and see if his style clicks with you.

However, the small town I live in (Moscow, Idaho) has a music academy where all the kids learn piano etc. But they teach other instruments too. The director plays bass (among other things). I had to wait a couple of months in the queue, but started the lessons a couple of weeks ago. They have been great for giving me direction in terms of how to focus my practice. I still use those online videos, but now I know I am searching for A minor pentatonic or whatever because that is the homework I was given.

Thanks E. I was able to meet up with a local teacher and had my first lesson today. Things went well so I'm going to say on this route for now. I gone over alot of the other videos and materials that were suggested here and in archived posts. I've bookmarked my favorites and if I want additional challenges to my weekly homework I'll definitely revisit them. Hope all works out for you as well.
